Intriguing, intricate, and well paced!

Death in a Lonely Place is an eerie, sinuous tale that takes us back to the British countryside where retired city detective Jake Jackson now finds himself tangled up in an investigation into “No Taboo”, an elite club which services the rich and famous, seemingly catering to whichever depraved or illegal activity they wish to engage in. The writing is tight and clever. The characters are multifaceted, arrogant, and ruthless. And the plot is an ominous mix of twists, turns, secrets, deduction, mayhem, manipulation, malicious intentions, trafficking, perversion, violence, and murder. Overall, Death in a Lonely Place is another entertaining, disturbing, edgy addition to the Jake Jackson series by Abell with well-drawn characters and a compelling storyline.

A solid second of series

I was eager to read the second of this series since I really enjoyed the first. This story follows former cop, Jake, as he builds a new life on a remote acreage near a small village. His desire to leave the rat race and technology behind competes with the adrenaline of solving a case. He’s drawn back into investigative mode on a missing child case. He has a good relationship with a local lady, but going back into dangerous situations threatens to end that balance. The pacing and tension for the story is a slow build, meandering, much like the new life Jake is attempting to create. I enjoyed the descriptive details, setting and atmosphere. While I enjoyed it anyone looking for fast-paced thriller mystery won’t find it here. I found myself immersed in an unfamiliar terrain and enjoyed the details of everything. The case kept me searching for clues and trying to solve who the perpetrator was. I look forward to more about Jake in the series.

Fantastic

The second book with ex-cop Jake Jackson is fantastic. Jake is asked to help find a missing girl, one of the clues found at the scene is a business card with the words No Taboo, this links to one of the cold cases Jake was working on, one he could not solve. Getting involved in delving deeper into No Taboo brings danger to Jake and to those helping him. Well written and fast paced with an unexpected twist at the end. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc.

A superb story teller!

After reading and loving the first book in this series, I was excited to read the second one. I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, if anything, it was even better! The story was very different and opened up at a different pace which kept it fresh and alive. Enough intrigue to keep you guessing. Some alarming and emotional scenes which got my heart racing. There were moments where the story resolved certain aspects which were satisfying, but there were still questions left unanswered which led into another level of the unfolding story. I love the writing style of this author and I’m about to read the third book in this series. Highly recommended and the last part is literally unputdownable!

Second in a series. It gets a bit dark

This is Stig Abell's second title; it follows on Death Under a Little Sky. While it is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one, anyone who likes Death in a Lonely Place will want to read the origin story. Here are many of the characters from the first book starting with Jake. He is a former detective who has chosen to live largely off the grid in a remote home that he was left by a relative (although he has many go arounds). Readers should take a look at the map of the estate that is in the front of the book. Jake has charmingly named the various spots for well-known detective fiction people and characters. There are other mysteries and authors mentioned in the text as well. Jake is in a relationship with a local vet, Livia, who has a young daughter named Diana. He wants this relationship to succeed. He and Livia are in different spots as an old case surfaces and Jake becomes involved while Livia's main wish is to keep Diana safe. No Taboo-it is a dark organization that offers people the unthinkable. In investigating it Jake has to think about a very dark place. Readers will wonder how the events unfold. Will Diana's newest and very wealthy client put her and/or Diana in danger? This book offers an interesting mix between Jake's rather cozy domestic life and some very nasty business. Abell manages both of these story aspects well. I recommend this title to those who enjoy crime stories. I look forward to whatever Abell writes next. Many thanks to Harper Collins UK and NetGalley for this title. All opinions are my own.

Excellent

This is the second in the Little Sky series and once again the beautifully described world comes to life in front of you, thanks to Stig Abel. Jake is loving his life in the countryside and is beginning to settle down in his inherited home. His life, love, and work all seem to be doing well. He becomes involved with a local case that a friend (sheriff) has asked a colleague to help him with. She has been very careful to investigate off the books after being threatened. This is all very dangerous and they have to be careful at all times. Mr Abell’s writing is poetic periodically, and you can see and feel like you are there in the countryside where Jake resides. The tension in some situations made me really keen to finish the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the next book. Manny thanks to Harper Collins Uk for the chance to read this arc copy for review consideration via Netgalley. My opinion is my own. #Netgalley, #HarperCollinsUk, #TheStigAbell
