An American teen learns she may have accidentally married the King of England, only to end up stranded on a tropical island with him in Kara McDowell's high-stakes rom-com, "Heir, Apparently." Freshman year is stressful enough without accidentally being married to the King of England. Of course, Wren Wheeler can't tell her Northwestern classmates about that; after surviving a narrowly-averted apocalypse over the summer, everyone's had enough excitement for one lifetime. Wren knows she needs to move on from Theo, but she can't forget the look in his eyes when he left her on that island in Greece and also, he took her dog. When an ill-fated attempt to rescue Comet the Apocalypse Dog turns into a chemistry-fueled reunion with Theo that's caught by the paparazzi, Wren finds herself under the royal spotlight. Suddenly, she's a problem for "the firm" to solve, and in order to be protected from the rabid press, she'll have to fly back to London with Theo. Along for the ride are Naomi and Brooke, as well as Theo's siblings, including Henry, the brother he's spent his life being compared to. But because the universe can't let these two maybe-newlyweds have one conversation in peace, their plane goes down over the Atlantic, crashing on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. Stranded with no sign of rescue, the group will have to band together against poisonous animals, catastrophic…

Adorable Romance

I adored Heir Apparently by Kara McDowell, the next book after The Prince and the Apocalypse, and it was a quick read—I finished it in one sitting! This book follows the story of Wren, who is still processing the revelation that she may be married to Theo, the future king of England. When the paparazzi uncover their secret marriage, Wren is forced to join Theo on a trip to England. Things take a dramatic turn when their plane crashes, and the two are stranded, having to fight for survival while grappling with their unresolved attraction to each other. As they navigate this dangerous situation, Wren's resourcefulness and Theo's reluctance to embrace his royal destiny are put to the test. The book explores their developing relationship, filled with humor, tension, and emotional depth. I was super excited to dive into this book after devouring the first one, and I wasn’t disappointed! Wren is such a fun character. She’s a problem-solver, and you get to see her skills in action when their plane crashes. Her quick thinking adds a lot of tension and humor to the story. The writing is top-notch. Kara McDowell does a wonderful job creating an engaging plot with characters you want to fall in love with. Overall, this is a 4-star book for me. I can't wait to see what McDowell comes out with next. Thank you to Netgalley , St. Martin's Press, and Wednesday Books for this Advanced Copy.

Great Sequel

After the cliffhanger at the end of the first book, I was so excited to read this one! And it did not disappoint. This was such a good story filled with romance, funny moments, and even moments of suspense. I love Theo and Wren! I definitely recommend this book. (Make sure you read The Prince and the Apocalypse first.)

A Royal Adventure

Heir, Apparently is a delightful sequel to The Prince & The Apocalypse, that continues the enchanting world-building and heartwarming romance established in the first book. Wren and the Prince are back, facing new challenges and deepening their connection. The premise of a plane crash and an uninhabited island is a classic setup for adventure and romance. While the addition of supporting characters adds humor and camaraderie, it can sometimes distract from the central couple's storyline. The author's writing style is engaging, and the chemistry between the main characters is palpable. The blend of humor, adventure, and romance creates a captivating reading experience. The audiobook narration by Laura Knight Keating is exceptional. She skillfully brings the characters to life, capturing their unique voices and accents. Her performance enhances the listening experience, making it a truly immersive experience. Overall, Heir, Apparently is a fun and entertaining read that will appeal to fans of young adult romance and fantasy.

Could not put it down

I absolutely loved The Prince and the Apocalypse, so when I saw there was going to be a sequel, I knew I had to read it. And holy cow, it did not disappoint. I devoured the book in a single day, which is not something that I usually do, but I just couldn't put it down. I loved Wren and Theo as characters, with all the tension and banter between them that I loved from the last book coming back again. I wasn't sure if it would be possible, but Heir, Apparently carried that same rollercoaster of emotions amidst tragedy, adventure, drama and romance. It was fun to meet some new characters along the way, giving the story a fresh dynamic. This duology of books was really well done, and I'd love to read them again! Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the advance review copy of Heir, Apparently! All opinions expressed in my review are completely my own.

Strong & Enjoyable Sequel

This was a strong followup to The Prince & The Apocalypse. I wasn't quite sure how the author was going to pull this storyline together but I really like how she did it - - especially her use of the dog as their major link - - very clever in my opinion. This book has many of the same components as the first one - - scheming, politics, royals, drama and intrigue. It also has the two of them stranded together in a dangerous place with only their wits to save them. Of course they aren't alone this time but they still function. together as a unit in trying to find a way off the island. The storyline does have its frustrating moments when you weren't sure that Wren and Theo would find the way to truly make it all work out. Theo wants better for Wren and she just wants to be with Theo. They never seem to be on the same page. AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The audiobook was well done and the narration was enjoyable and kept me listening. I thought it fit the style of the book quite well and lent to its draw. 4 stars Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

Super Fun and Satisfying Follow-Up

An extremely solid follow-up that may not have hit me as hard in the feels as The Prince & the Apocalypse did but still had some solid emotional beats with the perfect combination of romcom and disaster movie. The action takes off about three months after the first book's end and truly does not stop until the story’s conclusion. At the risk of spoilers for book 1, there’s not much I can say other than that our cast of characters is expanded to a wonderful ensemble that each offers their own distinct personality. We see clearly how Wren and Theo have changed as a result of the events of the first book and what that means for them now – and are rooting for them more than ever. Other than some minor inclusion of the miscommunication trope that is resolved before it gets annoying, the obstacles keeping them apart are very real and very valid for a variety of reasons. My only complaint would be that everything is resolved in a way that would NEVER occur in real life – but that’s the magic of romance in fiction and I ate it up at every turn. Overall, a super satisfying conclusion to a fun, fun, surprisingly emotional duology that will leave you smiling and believing in a happy future for the characters. I highly recommend. Content warning: mention of diabetes, plane crash, anxiety, injuries.

Disasters a plenty and I loved it

Ohh my effing gawd I loved this book, and I'll be reading this one over and over. Let me just say I read this right after finishing The Prince and the Apoclypse and it was perfection. Plain crashes, beach weddings, volcanos, cave ins, runaway dogs and abdication, what do all of these things have in common? This book and it's such a fun read. Delightfully full of twists and turns this book kept me on the edge of my seat and ready to jump every other chapter, I don't remember the last time I was this invested in a young adult book and I need more of it. As expected Wren and Theo have more than their fair share of obsticles (is it even love if you don't have to survive a desert island?) and while I was rooting for them from page one, that ending still had me reaching for some kleenex. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing a copy of this E-Book, I have voluntarily read it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fast-paced and fun sequel

Heir, Apparently picks up right where The Prince & The Apocalypse left off. I am so glad there is a sequel! I was very curious how the story would continue at the end of book one. While the imminent threat of worldwide destruction is no longer, danger seems to follow Wren and Theo. When they are reunited against the palace’s wishes, neither of them are prepared for another life-threatening disaster binding them together. As they fight to survive on an isolated tropical island with the clock ticking, will Wren get the answers she’s looking for? Heir, Apparently is a fast-paced and fun YA contemporary. Kara McDowell strikes an excellent balance of adventure, rising stakes, and Wren finally getting answers. Theo and Wren’s journey during the apocalypse did not come without a price, which initially forces Theo to maintain his distance. Meanwhile, Wren must decide how much further into the royal mess she wants to get. Wren and Theo have a sweet connection that deepens as they are forced to work together to survive on the island. The supporting characters was great and includes Theo’s siblings, Wren’s sister and friend, and of course Comet the dog. I’m curious if there will be more adventures in this series!
