Inspirational, feel good memoir

If you’re looking to be inspired, look no further than Live Like a Guide Dog by Michael Hingson and Keri Wyatt Kent. My good friend recommended this nonfiction book co-written by someone she knew, so I thought I would check it out. I have more time for audiobooks, and I was getting ready to take a road trip with my mom. It seemed like the kind of book she might enjoy, since she’s not a big reader. Mom also loves animals, and unlike a fiction book, I figured that if we didn’t complete it while on our trip, it would not bother her to leave the story unfinished. The book is divided into eleven chapters, each telling the story of Michael, one of his guide dogs (or his wife’s companion dog), and the lesson learned from the dog. I found this format to be a great way to write a memoir (though I found myself wishing the chapters were a bit shorter while we listened to find easy pausing points on the road trip). Stories of friendship, bravery, and love enthralled us. We were encouraged by the obstacles Michael overcame and astonished at the incredible things he would accomplish, despite what many would consider a disability. Live Like a Guide Dog was a great change of pace from my regular reading. The narration was pleasant, and Mom and I enjoyed half of the book together. When I returned home, she asked for updates about the other dogs, so I had to recap stories as I listened to them. I loved being able to share this book with my mom. I think it would make a great book club discussion book as well. I recommend it as a feel-good read that all ages can enjoy.

Engaging and Inspiring

Live Like a Guide Dog is an engaging combination of inspirational, motivational, and memoir. This book blends together to create an engaging story that details the author’s life with his various guide dogs and the impact that they had on him. His faith takes on a more prominent feature of the story the older that he gets. We get to experience memories that range from his youth all the way to his older years and some of his most traumatic experiences. Fear is something that can hamper us, but author Higson shares his inspiring story with readers to encourage them to find strength in their fears and to grow from them. Also, to find their faith in God and hold to it, especially in trying times, which he experiences many of. With inspiring quotes and short prayers scattered throughout this book is sure to bring inspiration to all who read it. You wouldn’t think this book would be a page-turner, but that is exactly what it is. Author Higson shares so much with readers, so you’re going to want to grab a few tissues as you read this book. It’s truly something else. Received a complimentary copy, review voluntary

Inspirational

Although I am not blind nor have I had any experience with guide dogs I found this to be quite inspiring. I loved the way the author was able to relate his experiences to different scriptures and it inspired me to look at some scriptures in a new light. His story was entertaining and thought provoking. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to discover a new author. All opinions are my own.

Inspiring

Thank you to NetGalley and Tyndale House Publishing as well as the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. #NetGalley #TyndaleHousePublishing #LiveLikeAGuideDog #MichaelHingson Title: Live Like A Guide Author: Michael Hingson and Keri Wyatt Kent Format: eBook Publisher: Tyndale House Publishing Publication Date: August 20, 2024 This book was just amazing. I learned so much from it. Michael Hingson tells the story of his life as a blind man as well as a guide dog trainer/guardian. This remarkable story includes learning to navigate the world after being born blind, training himself to be part of a guide dog team, and his harrowing escape from the Twin Towers on 9/11 with his guide dog, Roselle. This is a must read for anyone whether or not you’re blind, whether or not you’re a dog person. You need only be a thinking human. This book taught me a lot. Maybe it’s dumb of me but it never occurred to me that the person needs to be trained too! Mr. Hingson writes about walking a handler on a harness first so that he knew what it felt like when a large dog stood, walked, stopped, sat, etc. while next to him. He also needed to remember that if the dog acted in a way that he hadn’t been told, there was a reason. I was fascinated by this. I loved hearing about the personality of each dog as the author met them and his unique relationship with each. Each dog had his or her individual talents and drawbacks. Each required his or her partner to undergo different training to learn the quirks of each other. I was sad each time one retired, even though they were taken care of. It was interesting to learn from the point of view of a person who is blind. The different ways other senses, like hearing and smell can be used was neat! Things I take for granted as a sighted person are perceived in such different ways. The author rode a bike as a kid using his hearing. Very interesting. The stories in these pages are beautiful. I learned so much. This book made me laugh and cry. I’m thankful for the lessons within.
