Twenty-Four Seconds from Now . . .: A LOVE Story by Jason Reynolds
Product details
Web ID: 20312249An ordinary life
Told in vignettes a multiple of twenty-four ago (seconds, minutes, days, weeks, months…), Twenty-Four Seconds From Now… is a sweet book about a typical Black teen’s life. It is an ordinary, happy life, not dramatic and full of conflict like what you see in movies. His parents are super involved and important people to him. I aspire to be just like his mother. The book left me feeling happy and content.

The way sex should be discussed
Twenty-Four Seconds from Now is a gorgeous novel about two teenagers who are going to have sex the first time. The conversations that take place with the adults are open and honest and the friend group is relatable. Jason Reynolds writes frank, open, and readable young adult novels.

Loved It :)
As a school librarian in Texas, I was soooooo nervous when I began to read this novel. Yes, sex as a teenager has merit and needs to be discussed safely with students, but in our current political climate, I knew for sure I would not be able to purchase this book for a school library. Then I continued the story. Jason Reynolds found a way to address losing your virginity with such care and grace it was mind blowing and appropriate for school libraries. I absolutely loved this novel. True to Reynolds's creative nuances, the format of this story was a challenge as the plot unfolded backward at varying speeds of time lapsing, but once I understood and got into the groove of how the narrative was being revealed, I was hooked. I loved the friendships and the banter about sex between the friend group allowing space for so many different perspectives include backgrounds, genders, and sexualities. I enjoyed the complicated family dynamics and the thoughtful conversations about sex had with adults and getting the perspectives of different generations of people. I loved the conversation around dating and having multiple partners and the importance of communication and transparency in this type of relationship. The topic of consent and unselfish lovers and how love looks different for different partners was wonderful. It was such a refreshing and approachable book. It showed the importance of adults having these conversations with kids while also allowing them the space to explore and live their lives in a safe and informed manner. And the it was funny! Everything about this book was dope. Loved it. Thank you Jason Reynolds for being your amazing bold self and giving the kids what they need despite it all.

This was so cute!!!
From Instagram: 💫Book Review Post💫 Thank you @netgalley for this digital ARC🫶🏽 📚Title: Twenty-Four Seconds from Now…A Love Story 📌Author: Jason Reynolds 📅Pub date: 10/08/2024 🎓Thoughts: I’m way early on this one because the way I ran to @netgalley when I heard this author had a new book coming out!!! This author has a way of telling stories that are relevant and appealing to the young, and the young at heart in a way that is special and demotic. This story is a love story that is more than one about Neon & Aria deciding to experience the first time…yes doing that thing…. But a love story about friendship, family, and high school and how those things shape our lives and decisions. The story is told from the now and takes you back to the day they met and times in between with 24 being the coming denominator. This story was such a jubilant and satisfying read. I highly recommend this for the early high schoolers BEFORE they are thinking about taking that first step🤞🏽 and for adults like me who love a good YA that we use the excuse “a palate cleanser” to read, but we really just love reading books we didn’t have as kids. There’s so many things in this book that are so funny but true. He has created the most amazing and lovable characters, and we won’t even start on Denzel Jeremy Washington (you have to say it like that🤣) This author is basically a genius👌🏽 #24secondsfromnow #jasonreynolds #diversespines #yaauthor #firstlove #netgalley #bookreview #bookstagram

Thoughtful Decisions
At first I thought this book was missing some of the profound moments that other works from him contain. I mean, what does this book hold? It has a teenager who dates his girl for two years before they decide it’s time to consummate their relationship. He has frank discussions with his parents. He has thoughtful internal dialogue with himself and deeply cares for this girl. He goes through the moment of using a condom and actually rehearses so he won’t make a mistake when the time comes. Then I realize- these ARE the profound moments. I wish other teens considering their first time (or any time) would be as careful as Neon, and had people to talk to like Neon. I’m sure that there will be those who don’t like the book because of its content. It’s not graphic; the worst that it contains is a few words of profanity and a mild, quick discussion of mast****tion. This book is not a “how to” manual at all. Some students may even be disappointed because they wanted more details. It’s more of Reynolds showing Neon’s mind and the thoughts leading up to his big decision in good detail.

Jason Reynolds is always a hit
Neon and Aria have been dating for two years, and they've finally committed to having sex. At least, if Neon can get out of his own head. Follow their relationship backwards as Neon gets dating and relationship advice from various people in his life. Some of it better than others. Of course, I'm going to automatically want to read anything Jason Reynolds puts out because he's such a gifted writer. And this book definitely doesn't disappoint! Reynolds nails those teenage relationship emotions from the beginning. One of the things I liked best about this book is the variety of advice that Neon gets as he talks to different people in his life. It shows that having these open conversations with teens better prepares them than just ignoring it. This book is an excellent framework for those conversations with teens, but also allows teens to explore just by reading this book. In true Jason Reynolds fashion, this book is lyrical, with great dialogue and characters that absolutely leap off the page. It's not a long read, but it's definitely an important one. It might be one of my favorite Jason Reynolds books to date!
