A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants from a witch who may be too good to be true, from the author of The Return. All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe. After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start. She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. She's stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is. The people are all friendly and warm. Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation. Then Annie meets Sophie. Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend. More importantly, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and start living for herself. That's how Sophie lives. Annie can't help but gravitate toward the self-possessed Sophie, wanting to spend more and more time with her, despite the fact that the rest of the townsfolk seema little afraid of her. And like, okay. There are some things.

Oh! Oh! Oh! It's Magic!!

A 4 star read that was interesting and slightly different to what I was expecting. I mostly enjoyed the story and I like how it developed and ended. I enjoyed Annie and Sophie and all the characters who helped to completed the story. There were a couple of scenes where I was a little grossed out and felt that it was a little too much and is what brought my star rating down. I liked the way the conversations were written between all the characters. I thought Annie's choice of a"pet" was quite adorable and seemed like they chose each other. This gave me a different perspective on witches and witchcraft and I enjoyed the writing so much I will look for other books by Rachel Harrison.

That's Really Harsh

The main character cackles madly at a mildly annoying person while making him vomit out blood and bones. She never tries to be better or feels bad about that. In fact she feels strangely justified. Terrible attitude really.

Poorly Written Characters with a misguided story

None of the characters in this story are well-written or likable and the message is quite skewed. I don't think making an entire town hate and fear you is the answer to your self-pity.

Brilliant!

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a thriller in a way. It sucked me in from the first chapter. It has the perfect amount of heartbreak, wow didn’t see that coming, vengeance and growth. It was easy to relate to and I caught myself several times thinking I knew how the chapter was going to end only to be left with the feeling of “just one more chapter and I’ll go to bed”. Yeah right. It’s a great read!

Cozy and Empowering

I came for the spooky themes and stayed for the story of self discovery. This book was such a nice read.

This...isn't a good message.

Oh boy this one was surprisingly bad. What a cynical and self-absorbed story. At best it's boring with it's mundane activities and at worst it's belittling and pessimistic. What makes it worse is that it seems to think it's sharing a good message but like...what message is it? "Be an empowered person, make everybody afraid of you and obey your orders!" That's so terrible.

I wish I could read it again for the first time. I loved this book. It’s definitely one to devour in one sitting.
