Stephen King Lovers - You Need This Book!

My sister is the biggest Stephen King fan, and she's always dreamed of visiting and eating her way through Maine. Until that happens, I will be sharing this special cookbook with her. I went straight to the seafood section and made the haddock chowder, like a warm hug on these fall days. Next on the list is shrimp tetrazzini. The recipes are easy to follow and the photos beautifully atmospheric, feels like you're on set with the man himself. I've received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

A Yummy Read

As I always do when reading a cookbook I work my way through the whole book and pick a few recipes to try out to see how easy or difficult they will be to make. The first recipe I chose was the Potato and Collard Soup recipe. Being from the south collards are a must have ingredient especially for get togethers and holidays. I figured this soup would make a great addition to add to my repertoire. With cooler weather making its way here I start makng soups more, this one was definitely tasty and I know I'll make it again. The second recipe I picked was the Life Sentence Oatmeal, the addition of coconut in a couple of ways excited me. Coconut is a favored ingredient and I enjoy making oatmeal during cooler months. It was delicious and has now been added to my must save recipes. I must say I love Stephen King and his writing so I was truly excited for this cookbook and it didn't disappoint. I look forward to going back and trying more recipes and reading about the different books included inside.

Maine cooking for Stephen King fans

Castle Rock Kitchen by Theresa Carle-Sanders reveals its theme in the subtitle: “Wicked Good Recipes from the World of Stephen King.” Inspired by the Maine settings of King’s works, the cookbook offers recipes using New England ingredients like blueberries, lobster, potatoes, and maple syrup. Each recipe is preceded by a quotation from a King novel or story mentioning the foods in the recipes. Stephen King writes in the book’s forward that his favorites include “a couple of blueberry pancakes for breakfast, floating in maple syrup…a chunk of fried fish with vinegar for lunch, and a New England boiled dinner for supper—corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots.” His voice is present throughout the book which he calls “this lovely little cookbook.” Cookbook author Carle-Sanders includes recipes for all kinds of meals—from breakfast to dinner to supper—with sections on vegetarian, side dishes, and drinks and cocktails. Photographs by Jenny Bravo highlight both recipes and scenes from the picturesque Maine coast and countryside. I made many recipes from this cookbook with much success: --Pioneer Drumsticks—Skewered ground beef seasoned with onion, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander and lime juice grilled and served in a pita with greens. --American Chop Suey—Ground beef is sauteed with chopped onions, green peppers, celery, tomatoes, tomato paste, and macaroni until the macaroni is tender. The dish is sprinkled with Parmesan. --Grand Ol’ String Beans—Blanched green beans are sauteed with sliced shallots in bacon fat and sprinkled with crumbled sauteed bacon. --Blue Cheese Broccoli—Broccoli spears are tossed with a homemade French dressing, then baked until browned, and sprinkled with blue cheese. --Blueberry-Lemon Curd Muffins—Blueberry muffins are flavored with tangy buttermilk and fresh blueberries and filled with homemade lemon curd. --Shrimp Tetrazzini—Cooked spaghetti is stirred with a sauce of sauteed onions, tomatoes, minced garlic, wine, green peas, grated Parmesan, and cream, and then baked with a top layer of shrimp and Parmesan. Other recipes on my make-next list include Apple Cinnamon Rolls, Killer Macaroni and Cheese, Haddock Chowdah, Blueberry Cheesecake Pie, Deli Potato Salad, and Nettie’s Rolled Lasagne. This book would be a welcome gift to a Stephen King fan or someone who enjoys traditional New England home cooking. I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review. I enjoyed cooking from this book and sharing the results!

Classic Maine Food, Completely King Inspired

Everything about this book feeds my desire for warm and cozy Maine treats. There are several things I really like about this cookbook. The obvious is that it is based on Stephen King's works. The second is that the author is from Maine and while I've only ever visited, so many things about this book brought me back to my time in Maine. And the one thing I was hoping for in this cookbook was a blueberry pie... if you know, you know. And the author delivered! The recipes all seem easy enough even for myself, the out-of-a-box home chef, that I think anyone else could also make. I enjoyed the photos, the excerpts from King's work, and the theme was well maintained throughout.
