Crooked House by Agatha Christie centers around former English diplomat Charles Hayward who plans to marry the wealthy Sophia Leonides, but the murder of her grandfather, Aristide Leonides, prevents Sophia from committing to Charles’ engagement. Desperate to wed his love, Charles investigates the mysterious circumstances of the murder so that he can win the fair maid and live happily ever after. Familiar with the backdoors of politics and using his name as a passport, Charles aides Chief Inspector Taverner’s team of investigators to interrogate the many members of the house, twelve to be exact, to find Aristide Leonides’ murder. While investigating the family, the police and Charles are thrown many curve balls as to who the murder might be. Many motives and opportunities arise against the characters as to why they should kill Aristide Leonides. At first, the suspicion falls on Aristide's wife, who is 50 years younger, and her supposed love interest, Mr. Laurence Brown. After Nanny is murdered, suspicions continue to bounce between Mr. Leonides’ sons, Roger and Philip, their wives, Clemency and Magda, his sister-in-law, Edith and his grandchildren, Sophia, Eustace, and Josephine. The reader is left wondering if Charles will ever get to marry Sophia until just about the last page. As a senior about to embark into the un-coddled world of college, Crooked House warned me that those I trust might be those that kill me; those I love might be those I die for. Throughout the book, the murderer is hiding in plain sight and even confides the trust of Charles, “In this crooked house, the truth hides in plain sight,” which means that the murderer was in front of Charles the whole time, even when he trusted them. Readers who love any type of mysteries and romping through Victorian England will love the book because the book sends the reader on a hunt for the murderer inside a wealthy family in England. I love murder mysteries and I thought that Christie did an amazing job (as always) by giving each character a reasoning to be the murderer, but being very stealthy as to who the murderer actually is. Crooked House is one of the best Agatha Christie books I have read. I definitely got goosebumps towards the end of the book trying to figure out the murderer. I would highly recommend reading Crooked House to anyone who needs to kill a few hours.

Crooked House
I adore the way Agatha Christie incorporates children’s nursery rhymes into the story. This novel features a crooked man and his crooked house. The story opens with Sophia Leonides and Charles Hayward promising to rethink marriage after the war. A problem arises with the death of Sophia’s grandfather, Aristide Leonides. Aristide has been poisoned and the murderer resides in the crooked house. The police and Charles begin the search for the killer, but a motive must be found. No Hercule Poirot in this novel, but Charles, the narrator of the story, guides the investigation. He must solve the crime or lose his beloved Sophia. This novel stands as one that Christie marked as one of her favorites, and her love of this tale glimmers through the haze.
