History Book
After watching House of the Dragon season 2's meandering storyline, I became impatient and wanted to know how the story unfolds, so I decided to read George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. The book tells the history of House Targaryen from the conquest, which makes me wonder why HBO decided to focus on the Dance of the Dragons storyline, dragging out that story for multiple seasons. They could have produced the whole book over multiple seasons. Anyway, Fire & Blood is a rather dry history, the writing sometimes repeats itself and too many characters share the same name -- too many Aegons. And it's an unreliable history as the book purports to be the study of three historians, each with a different version of historical events. And this is only part one, so there is a second volume to come. There aren't many people to root for in this book, similarly to the TV show, as people of questionable character are always scheming for control. The book does immerse the reader in the history of Westeros, so readers into the Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones would most likely find interest.

It’s a history book, so expect it to be so
I think many saw the show and ran to grab the book and underestimated just how in depth this book is. It is a true history textbook and not a drama. That doesn’t mean it’s bad or worth 1 star like many have given it. Martin does an amazing job detailing the history of the Targaryens in this and if you are looking to learn more about this world then this book is great. Much like JRR Tolkiens “The Silmarillion” expect it to be a history book.
