National Bestseller, you can live a full, happy and healthy life without ever feeling excluded or deprived. When doctors told Danielle Walker that food didn't cause her autoimmune disease and couldn't help control it, she set out to prove them wrong. Diagnosed with an extreme form of ulcerative colitis at 22, Danielle was terrified she'd never be able to eat all the wonderful, great-tasting foods she loved growing up or host warm, welcoming gatherings with family and friends. So when the medicine she was prescribed became almost as debilitating as the disease itself, Danielle took matters into her own hands, turned her kitchen into a laboratory, and set to work creating gut-healthy versions of the foods she thought she'd never be able to enjoy again. Three New York Times bestselling cookbooks later, Danielle has become a beacon of hope for millions around the world suffering from autoimmune diseases, food allergies and chronic ailments. Now for the first time, with stunning transparency about the personal toll her illness took on her physically, emotionally and spiritually, Danielle reflects on everything she's learned during her decade-long journey toward healing, including the connection between gut health and overall well-being, the development of her favorite recipes and the keys for not simply surviving her autoimmune disease but thriving despite it. A story of love and hope!

I’ve been a fan of Danielle's for almost 11 years now- right after I found out I could no longer eat gluten, I discovered her blog. I own all 4 of her cookbooks and use them multiple times a week. Like Danielle, I love food, love to cook, and love to feed my family and friends. She has revealed bits and pieces of her story over the years, in her cookbooks and on her blog, and I’ve been impressed by how she faces her challenges and setbacks— with dignity, perseverance and faith. Her memoir is beautiful- and is not just for those suffering from IBS, UC or Crohn’s, but anyone with autoimmune diseases or food allergies or health problems. It’s a story of love, faith- even in the midst of some of her darkest days of flare-ups and personal loss, and perseverance and hope. Quite frankly, Danielle just refused to give up, even when the doctors told her food couldn't help and couldn't give her answers outside of the typical drug recommendations. Having suffered greatly with several AI diseases myself, food has simply changed my life. Danielle's recipes have been a huge part of that. If I could give her memoir 10 stars, I would. Thank you, Danielle, for your bravery in sharing your life so openly. I have no doubt you will continue to reach, help, and inspire others through your memoir.

Hope

I received an early audio copy of this book to review. Danielle is so honest about what it’s like to live with serious health challenges and how changing what she ate literally saved her life. I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with autoimmune diseases, multiple food allergies or intolerances, and/or ongoing health problems that you can’t pinpoint. I really appreciate that her husband wrote about what it’s like to be a caregiver for a spouse with health issues. My favorite thing about it though is that she offers hope to those struggling with these issues. #foodsavedme

You need this book in your life!

This book is a must read for anyone with an autoimmune disease or if someone you love has one. There is so much information in this book and Danielle is so brave to share her inspirational story with the world. It’s great that her husband Ryan has a chapter too, to give helpful advice for anyone caring for someone with an autoimmune disease. This is a memoir but it also acts as a wonderful guidebook as you navigate your way through a chronic illness diagnosis and beyond. I wish I had this when I was first diagnosed! I laughed, I cried, I felt comforted and full of hope. I want to listen to the auto book all over again! Do not hesitate to get your hands on a copy!

Inspiration for dealing with a chronic illness

While Danielle's illness is different from mine, our stories are similar. I can relate to so many different aspects of what she has been through, from arguing with doctors, to delays in diagnosis, to the guilt you feel when you can not be present for your family. I also had to figure out, on my own, how to change my diet, and which foods I could have, in an attempt to improve my life. Doctors do not discuss the possibility of dietary changes potentially helping you. Your choice is to either take the pills they shove at you, or they refuse to treat you, I've experienced it all. At this point I assume that it's lack of knowledge on their part. I would not wish my illness on my worst enemy, however, there is definitely comfort in knowing that there are other people who can understand and relate, because they've been through something so similar to what you have. Danielle's story does just that, and I truly appreciate it and I thank her for sharing it with us!

Very Inspiring to Fellow Health Warriors

I have used Danielle Walker's cookbooks since the first one was published and own each of them. I am a fan of her recipes and make many of them on a regular basis. As a nutritionist I know that her recipes are healthy and tasty. Like Walker, I have to eliminate certain foods from my diet for health reasons. As a celiac, I have eliminated gluten and dairy and have several other food allergies as well. I was very excited to read this memoir by Walker to learn more about her as a person. Her words articulated many of the things I have also felt over the years. Like Walker, who had a major flare after having multiple vaccines for a trip to Africa, my immune problems started after vaccines for a trip to Haiti in 2007. Like Walker, I used the Specific Carbohydrate Diet early on in my healing process. When she discovered she had numerous food sensitivities, she had to eliminate a number of foods for a while in order to heal. She goes through her recipes to find anything she could it and comes up empty. She goes shopping and has to read the labels on every single item and returns most to the shelves. I have gone through each of these situations. It was so encouraging to read about another person who has been through a similar situation, especially since she has done so much good for the world through this experience. Walker is a Christian and her faith shows through in this very inspiring memoir. I received a complementary copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Resilience over struggle. Hope for so many people!

Danielle’s story is one of resilience and hope. She battled to gain her health back despite the medical world telling her to accept what they deemed her fate. She continued to push back and ask the questions worth asking and through hard work and big personal battles including heartbreaking losses, she discovered nutrition really does matter when it comes to battling auto-immune disorders, gut-issues, and various other health concerns. She has created a community of people who have found success and hope as a result of the path she has blazed. In this memoir Danielle shares her journey with the world in such a deep and personal way to continue to reach more people who might still be struggling. It is such an important book.

Beautifully authentic! Captivating!

I was given the opportunity to listen the audible version of this book prior to its release. “Food Saved Me” is Danielle Walker’s personal memoir. Her own heartfelt story written with honesty and transparency. She shares about her life, the correlation of food and family, the initial shock of being diagnosed with a severe auto immune disease at age 22 and how she has courageously faced all the ups and downs since. In the pages of her book, you will see how her gift of hospitality, love of family and food fueled her determination to find the right solutions to help her process, heal and thrive. The book is captivating and brought me to tears multiple times. A stunning and deeply inspirational part of her story is the way her first cookbook was birthed! Her motivation was driven by her beautiful gift to NURTURE others which allowed her to press through her own suffering! It’s a miracle story you won’t want to miss. Danielle Walker has been instrumental in 'food saving ME’ personally through her NY times best selling cookbooks, her blog and her online cooking courses. Her cookbooks are not only beautiful but filled with delicious family tested recipes that satisfy anyone with or without food allergies or health conditions. Danielle has changed my life for the better by teaching me how to convert from being a “traditional” southern cook, to a “healthy” southern cook! Naturally, I was thrilled to read “Food Saved Me”. It is appropriately titled, incredible and has only endeared me to her and her precious family even more. Her story brings to light to the significance of food and the ability it has to heal. The fact that we are body, soul, mind and spirit and each part of us needs to be nourished. Reminds me of the Bible verse in Romans 8:28 “All things work together for the good of those who are called according to His purpose for them”. We all go through various challenges in life and if we choose to look we can always find something good that comes from it. We all have purpose and need one another, there is always hope and this book will encourage you!
