Web ID: 16836476Get ready for an emotional makeover!
As someone who has always struggled with imposing thoughts, this book was INCREDIBLE. I have always loved Jennie Allen, and every time I read another book by her, I love her more and more. She is so wise and discerning, and she has chosen to follow the Lord in sharing her experiences and growth with the world. If you're like me and struggle with thoughts such as, "I'll never be good enough," "do I even matter," "God will never be able to use my mess," this is the book for you. Jennie talks about taking every thought captive, and and submitting our minds to Christ, so he can transform us from the inside out. Our circumstances may not change, but by transforming our thoughts, we can change our outlook, emotional reactions, and negative views into something that brings hope, grace, and encouragement. I will always recommend ANYTHING Jennie Allen writes, and "Get Out of Your Head" is no different. Everyone should read this book!

Somewhat okay
I enjoyed it, but it's a bit heavily religious compared to the books I normally read. For people who like reading a different version of the Bible, the book will hit perfectly. I received a review copy from NetGalley and have left my opinion.

Everyone Should Read This Book
Get Out of Your Head is probably one of the most influential books you can read. This book is a quick read because you will become so immersed in the content. Allen takes a whole book and examines how the Christian can and should renew their mind. I am sure you are wondering how a whole book could be written about this one thing. I assure you that this book is not filled with fluff and filler. The first part of the book, Allen recounts her own struggle with doubt and depression, which consumed 18 months of her life. She talks about what lead up to it, what she experienced and how the Lord lead her out of it. She also talks about what renewing your mind means and why this is difficult in general. The second part of the book becomes more practical as she talks about common mindsets that we get stuck in and the Biblical antidote to breaking free of these thought patterns. The third part is a beautiful summary as she examines the mind of Christ and what the Bible says about God and us. This is probably one of the most influential books of my year. Allen weaves scripture with personal stories, philosophy with practical advice, all under the banner of grace. She also inserts interesting facts about the physical part of your brain and what prayer, meditation and training your thoughts does to your physical body and mind. I highly recommend this book! I believe every Christian should read it. Thank you to NetGalley and WaterBrook & Multnomah for the complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Raw, vulnerable, and challenging!
I enjoyed Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen. This was much needed, and I was thankful to read this in my the middle of COVID-19 in 2020. While sharing her very personal journey with readers, she challenges us to nip toxic thoughts in the bud. I enjoyed the constant encouragement to use scripture to combat those thoughts. She gives much to think about, including that we have a choice once thoughts enter our heads. We have a choice! I also enjoyed her sharing about the last 2 percent. I’ll let you discover what that is about. Very worth reading! I received a reader copy from WaterBrook & Multnomah via in exchange for my review.

Take on the fight
I found Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen to be meaningful encouragement to stop the toxic rehearsals in my head and replace it with His Truth. The basis of the book I think fits this statement: “Learning to capture our thoughts matters. Because how we think shapes how we live.” So important that I renew my mind. To be committed to breaking the cycles/spirals that are not taking me in the right direction. To be active in the fight. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Painful read that’s not theologically sound
In her new book, “Get Out of Your Head: Stopping the Spiral of Toxic Thoughts,” Jennie Allen declares that, “You are in charge of our thoughts. They are not in charge of you.” However, isn’t that the entire premise of the book and what it’s saying? That we aren’t always in charge of our thoughts and need help with getting in charge of them? Published by Waterbrook, Allen’s 256-page book is actually a nice effort at truly finding out a way to control toxic thoughts. But as much as I wanted to like this book, the more I read, the more frustrated I became. The writing style was rambling, disjointed, repetitive and condescending, as well as rife with overused phrases like “What if I told you…” In addition, since Allen’s not an expert in neuroscience or the brain, she lacks the credibility, as well as the biblical knowledge, to give safe, sound advice (which she loosely bases on strange experiences she had in her past). She also looks down on fellow believers who take anti-depressants, which have actually helped many (i.e., Sheila Walsh, Tommy Nelson, etc.). Although she does cite some sources, she should have left her questionable assertions to the experts – truly qualified Christian psychologists and neurologists who actually know what they’re talking about. While I rarely say this about the books I review, “Get Out of Your Head” was painful to finish. Although I skimmed the rest of the book to find some kind of continuity and cohesiveness, I ended up discontinuing my quest. Again, while I do applaud Allen’s efforts in attempting to solve a problem with the thought life biblically and psychologically, she ends up falling short on both accounts. It was a painful read that’s not theologically sound. I gave Allen’s book a 2 out of 5 stars. Full disclosure: In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255, I received an advanced copy of this book free through Waterbrook. My opinions are my own and I wasn’t required to write a positive review. © 2020 by Doug S., M.A.
