Gregory Salvo

I enjoy hiking and was looking for a pack that will work for short day hikes. This pack is a good size for the day with a large opening to the main storage. Inside it has a smaller compartment in a mesh pocket as well as a water bladder area. Outside has 3 pockets and those two are on the hip belt. I think that the two water bottle holders on the side could use a cinch to keep the bottles from falling out then reaching down would be helpful. Overall, the pack is comfortable, especially the mesh padding supporting your back that gives space for air to get in and cool the sweat away. Great pack for day hiking.

Stratos 24

Great day hiking pack. Plenty of room for everything you’d need to bring for a day hike. Water bottle pockets hold a Nalgene with no problems. The hip straps and vented back are very comfortable. The frame makes it less compressible and a little heavier than Some other bags but adds to the comfort and support on the trail. Used to use an osprey stratos 24 and overall like this bag better

Better on than off

This bag excels on your back. It's one of the most comfortable daypacks I've worn. The back vent works well, the load sits evenly, and the straps are all appropriately placed. I find it comfortable for both everyday city use (as a grad student) and for weekend hikes. Unfortunately the comfort comes at a bit of a cost. Off your back, the pack does not stand up well at all. It's done a 180 off my car seat more times than I can count, and I need to lay it down under my desk at school or else it will inevitably tip over no matter how aggressive of an angle I use to lean it on things. This combine with the slippy/short bottle holders mentioned by others can create quite the scenario in terms of spills (I've learned my lesson with coffee). When hiking, Nalgenes can be secured a little better by putting a strap through the lid loop to prevent catastrophe, but this extra step can be hard to remember. The other day I bent over to adjust a boot and watched my full Nalgene pop out over my head and slide down an icy slope. I was dismayed that I might be out of hydration for the rest of the hike. Luckily disaster was avoided, but it did make me think twice about taking the pack on hikes. Bottom line, if comfort is your top priority, then is is a great pack. Future models have some room for improvement. With this model, be sure that your drink containers have great lids and use a strap or biner to prevent losing your bottles on hikes.

Water bottle always falling out.

Water bottles always falling out. Got this pack a month and a bit ago and was pretty happy with how it felt when I tried it on. I like most of the features like the breathable back and comfortable hip belt and straps. However, the fact that when I tried to tie my shoe and my travel mug smashed me in the head and dropped to the ground and broke, is really a downfall. As well as losing my water bottle that I've travelled with for over 3 years because the bottle pouches are much to loose. It's a simple design flaw but it's cost me money and sentimental loss. I like to have my gear for a long time and all I want to do is get a new bag.

Highly Recommend

The Salvo 24 is exactly what I needed. This pack is perfect for both day hikes and extended travel. The light frame gives me ultimate comfort when carrying my gear, as well as travel essentials. Plenty of pockets and straps for everything from trekking poles to technology/valuables. The zippers are solid and easy to pull. The pack sits high, but is easily adjusted to fit the way you want. One of my favorite features is the hip pockets for quick access. I've gotten many compliments on the look of the bag, it's simple and clean. Just bought another one for my father!

Great Day Hiking Pack

The new 2018 Salvo brings some much appreciated compartment upgrades to an already popular pack. The new Salvo has an exterior mesh pocket across the front and an internal mesh compartment inside the main compartment. The pack is very comfortable. I've very happy with the ventilation and suspension system, especially on a day pack. The hip pockets are a nice size. They fit my iPhone 7 Plus, but only if the phone is not in a case. The tango red color is awesome. In real life, the pack is several shades darker than the pictures. The straps remain vibrant like the pictures and provide a nice accentuating color. The black buckles, padding, and internal lining look great with tango red. Overall, the tango red pack is extremely attractive. The zippers operate very well and do not snag. They have large finger loops which make them very easy to operate. While not ultra light, the bag is 0.5 lbs lighter than the Osprey Stratos 24. My only critique is that I wish the side mesh pockets were taller. When the main compartment is packed, I cannot push water bottles down as far as I would like (see screenshot). Tall bottles (like 1L Smartwater bottles) stick out a lot. However, I must admit I have not had an issue with bottles falling out. Overall, the 2018 Salvo 24 is a great pack and I'm happy with my purchase.
