Amazing book with amazing characters

For my summer reading this year I had read this book, when I had started reading this book I had started to love it. The book is a about, a kid named Brandon he's nine years old an he's visiting the north tower with his dad, since he had been suspended from the school from taking and breaking someone's toy. Him, and his dad go to the windows of the world where Brandon's dad works. While Brandon's dad go's to work on something Brandon sneaks out to buy the toy of the friend that he broke but then... BOOM! The North tower explodes out of nowhere. Brandon has to get out but his dad is stuck in the 107th floor. What I really liked about this is the characters, all of the characters are really likeable Brandon is likeable since he's nice caring and smart. And in some parts of the story when it gets emotional, it is really sad. And when the book also wants to have suspense. It does, like when The tower explodes and Brandon is stuck in the elevator, we could see how scared everyone was. And another part I like is the words he chose like " The elevator was getting hot, it had started to feel like a sauna". We could feel how ho it was inside the elevator. That's what I really liked Would I recommend this book? Yes! This is a book I would recommend there are part's in this book I think people would really like, and really enjoy, so in my opinion this is a good book.

Wow! What an amazing book!

I rarely leave a book 5 stars but I am so impressed. This was the first book from Alan Gratz that I have read and it won't be the last. I picked this one up because I wanted to learn more about what had happened on 9/11 and how it affected people during this time and it really is an amazing book. This book is technically classified as a middle grade reader novel but I would highly suggest any reading level to read this book. I was floored by the attention to detail, the heart, the beauty, and suspense in Gratz's prose. I am so glad that he included Brandon's story from 9/11/01 but also Rashmina's story from 9/11/19...in Afghanistan. I was invested in each of their stories from the very beginning. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Excellent Fictional Read for Young and Old Alike

This book caught my eye at a Scholastic Book Fair at my Grandchildren's school. I guess because my love of reading was cemented in my early years, Young Adult and Middle School reads always appeal to me. The cover and of course the title of this book immediately interested me. I purchased a copy and brought it home. My 30-something year old daughter read it first and now I have read it. I give it five stars for a really good story intertwining two children's lives 18 years apart. It takes true facts about the World Trade Center disaster and the war in Afghanistan and weaves them into a fictional account that educates and informs the world we now live in. Ultimately as Brandon the main character from September 11th 2001 concludes, we survive by 'everyone working together'. I often draw my grandchildren into the world of reading by giving them a simple plot line from the books I am reading. I have talked to my five youngest grandchildren ages 6 to 11 about this book. I am going to encourage my 11-year-old grandson to read this book soon as he is beginning to learn about world affairs and though he doesn't know a lot about September the 11th, 2001 this novel would be a good place to start. As I look back upon my 65 years of life, I feel that September 11th, 2001 is that definitely a day that has a 'before' and 'after' feel . I highly recommend this book to traders of all ages.

Deserving of every star I gave it

Wow. I rarely leave a book 5 stars but I am so impressed. This was the first book from Gratz that I have read and it won't be the last. I picked this one up because its coming up on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and I'm not really sure what I was expecting. This book is technically classified as a middle grade reader novel. HOWEVER. As an adult I was floored by the attention to detail, the heart, the beauty, and suspense in Gratz's prose. I am so glad that he included Brandon's story from 9/11/01 but also Rashmina's story from 9/11/19...in Afghanistan. I was invested in each of their stories from the very beginning. I cannot recommend this book enough. I can see this a great read-aloud book for middle school or even high school.

Vivid recounting of 9/11

Headed toward the 20th anniversary of 9/11, this historical fiction recount of the terrible terrorist attack is a must-read. Author Alan Gratz provides a vivid and emotional account of that day from two unique points of view. Young readers who only know of the event from the stories and school lessons they've heard will better understand the tragedy, and readers from around the world who witnessed the event through actual experience or through the media will be taken back to memories of that day that will chill their souls. Brandon made a poor choice at school resulting in a suspension. Raised by a single father, the suspension requires him to go to work with his dad rather than be unsupervised at home. He's been to the restaurant on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center before, but today he isn't particularly happy about it. Once he and his dad arrive at the top of the giant building, he makes a decision he knows could get him in more trouble, but he is determined to make up for his mistake at school. Once his dad is busy at work, Brandon heads back down the building via a nearby elevator. His destination is the Sky Lobby shopping area on a lower level. Disaster strikes while Brandon is in the crowded elevator. He and its occupants have no idea what has happened, but they know they must escape the elevator, and Brandon is convinced he must return to the 107th floor to be with his father. One hundred and two minutes later as Brandon runs from the complete ruin of the two towers, he knows his life has been changed forever. Reshmina lives in a small mountain village in Afghanistan. It is September 11, 2019. She knows the dangers of living in a place where the Afghan National Army, the Taliban, and American troops fire on one another on an almost daily basis. When she finds a wounded American soldier and decides to help him, she knows the risk. Reshmina could be putting her entire family and village in danger. Her twin brother's anger has convinced him the only answer to the constant chaos in their lives is to join the Taliban for revenge. Despite Reshmina's pleas, he heads to the Taliban camp leaving Reshmina to brave the consequences of her actions. Through alternating voices Alan Gratz tells two memorable stories whose paths intertwine as they educate readers about 9/11 and its impact on our country and the world. GROUND ZERO is the best YA historical fiction book I've read in quite some time. I highly recommend it!
