A true story from Raina Telgemeier, the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author of Smile, Sisters, Drama, and Ghosts. Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach. Her mom has one, too, so it's probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she's dealing with the usual highs and lows- friends, not-friends, and classmates who think the school year is just one long gross-out session. It soon becomes clear that Raina's tummy trouble isn't going away. . . and it coincides with her worries about food, school, and changing friendships. What's going on? Raina Telgemeier once again brings us a thoughtful, charming, and funny true story about growing up and gathering the courage to face and conquer her fears.

Very great graphic novels

First time purchasing the graphic novel books, and I think my favorite part of this book is the Raina failure for the presentation because of Michelle. The first page is amazing to start for the kids selection.

happy, confused, nerves and new beginnings

I really like the book. It tells the reader about a kid’s life. All the things a middle schooler goes through like the friend dynamic, moving, getting nerves and everyone changing. When they get nervous it ok to in fact it's good to be nervous. How she went to therapy, talked things out and ask for help. This book lets kids known that they are not alone and you never know what some else is going through. And might make new friends that you hated but realize there was something in common.

A great story about coping with anxiety

Telgeimeir goes a great job in Guts of showing her struggles with anxiety in middle school, the problems it caused for her, and how she learned to cope with it. It is through and through a compelling story about Raina’s struggles first, but you and your kids might just pick up a couple of coping techniques yourselves along the way. Though there is no LGBTQ+ rep, I highly recommend it for any child (and especially queer children) given the increasing rates of mental illness and anxiety in the community. As a graphic novel, the illustrations were a bit overly cartoonish for my tastes (which is the only thing stopping me giving this five stars) but it is still a worthwhile read for any middle grader!
