Isabel "Izzy" Crane isn't sure how she feels about her family moving to Sleepy Hollow. As a lifelong skeptic, Izzy is not buying into the supposed facts behind Washington Irving's legend of the Headless Horseman. She has enough going on trying to figure out where she'll fit into her new school with friends like prankster Croc Byun. Then Izzy meets Vicky Van Tassel who is exhausted by her family leaning so hard into the legend and how much they expect her to do every season to keep that legend alive. Except as Izzy gets to know Croc and Vicky better the trio starts to see alarming signs suggesting that the stuffy legend might be hiding a very real curse--one that's targeting Vicky as the latest member of the Van Tassel line. With a Halloween deadline to break the curse, Izzy will have to use all of her wits--and some supernatural support--if she wants to save Vicky before it's too late in Hollow (2022) by Shannon Watters, Branden Boyer-White, Berenice Nelle, Kaitlyn Musto, Kieran Quigley, Goncalo Lopes, Jim Campbell. Hollow is a standalone graphic novel retelling elements of the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Izzy is depicted with brown skin, Croc is cued as Asian (possibly Korean based on his last name), Marjorie--a secondary characters--uses crutch canes. Full-color artwork and richly detailed panels bring Sleepy Hollow and its spooky elements to life as Izzy and her new friends work to break the curse and save Izzy. A potential love triangle with Izzy, Vicky, and Croc is quickly diffused in support of friendship while Izzy and Vicky's new romance blossoms. In addition to breaking the curse, Vicky also works to establish boundaries with her demanding family in this modern retelling where Vicky is able to shift from a bystander to an active participant in the story. Hollow is a fast-paced, intersectional retelling perfect for your next spooky read.
