I Want to Be a Vase by Julio Torres

Web ID: 17689102Imaginative story and beautiful illustrations, but
A delightfully creative, imaginative story with a bold, bright, refreshing color scheme and an innovative ray-traced illustrative style make for a unique and visually compelling book that children as young as 3 will love; however, the use of low-contrast outline type fonts will be challenging for readers under 4 years old, and at one point one of the characters’ soliloquies veers off to a level of self-questioning that can only be described as a momentary lapse into deep existential angst that IMHO is too heavy and challenging an ask for young readers under 4 years old. Apart from that, Julio Torres’s first full-length children’s book is a delightful, exuberantly illustrated ode to childhood agency and self-actualization that evokes the quintessential themes of tension between one’s own search for self-identity and rigid societal expectations that was similarly explored most recently in John Oliver’s _Last Week Tonight_ 2018 children’s book tie-in, _A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo_

Hilarious, Unique, Inspiring
This sweet, hilarious story encourages readers not only to be precisely who they want to be, but that there's room in this world for everyone to do so. Compassionate, goofy, and strikingly beautiful, but also just a fun, funny read that kiddos will love just as much as their adults!

Be Who (or what) You Want to Be!
This is a great kids book about being who you want to be even if it means some change. The art is colorful and whimsical and the story is fun and engaging. It features wonderful familial/community support as other household items rally to support the plunger in its decision to be a vase. It also teaches acceptance and inclusivity. Highly recommend for readers of all ages!
