Solid Novel

To be fair, I finished this quite awhile ago, but I recall it fondly, if not in detail. Every time I look at it I can't recall the plot, but I just have to open to any page and it comes right back to me, mostly, so that must be good, right? I believe the main character is sympathetic, there's a nice gradual reveal of various complications to the various relationships, and the ending was satisfying without having to rely on deus ex machina or leaving gaping plot holes. I seem to be acquiring quite a few of Ms. Ware's novels, so seems a solid recommendation in the mystery genre.

In A Dark, Dark Wood (thoughts)

4.5 stars "What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn." - from Goodreads. I wrote down twenty-four titles from my own shelves and formed my own TBR jar this year. This book was my first pick from the jar and what a pick it was. I believe that this is Ruth Ware's debut - which is pretty darn amazing to me. This is definitely my type of read! The book starts with a short prologue that lets the reader know that something has happened but we don't know exactly what. The book is told from both present with all of those questions and then the past when the weekend away begins. I was completely captivated by this book. I needed to know what had happened and the whys behind it all. I will say that I had my guesses but for me I was just invested in the ride that the author was taking me on. And what a ride it was. I will say that the ending was a bit sadder than I expected (was it just me?) and also darker. You definitely might want to check content warnings before picking this one up. But honestly, I loved this one a lot - I can't even rank her books because of the ones that I've read I have enjoyed them all with One by One being my favorite. I think. Do you see my struggle? She is a favorite author at this point, and I hope to continue working on catching up on her backlist this year. Readers who enjoy suspense filled books that keep you guessing and can't set down should pick this book up. If you enjoyed There Should Have Been Eight by Nalini Singh then pick this one up. I think that I'm landing on 4.5 stars and rounding up.

Didn’t want to put it down!

I really enjoyed this book. It started out slow, giving us time to get to know the characters. The writing style was smooth and easy to follow. The main characters often reacted to things in ways people I know might behave in the same situation. Just like in real life, some of them were not always nice. Lots of little hints that things weren’t as they seemed. But nothing really bad happened until about halfway through the book. When it did, it was fairly intense the rest of the way. I wouldn’t really call this a thriller, but more of a mystery revolving around what really happened and why it did.

Great Read!

Great book for a book club. It’s good if you want to discuss each character and their different personalities. It’s incredible how so many people in real remain friends with people they no longer have anything in common. All of the characters had their own issues, so at the beginning it’s hard to determine who the culprit is. My favorite character was Nina, she was her no matter what.

Meh

I was actually glad to see that this is Ms Ware's first book because it wasn't that good. The plot had huge holes and none of the characters were likable in the least. There were at least three continuity errors, which were distracting. Like, a character went from the living room to the kitchen and someone said here, let me show you the living room. A nonessential character's name was 'Grig', as in Grigery. Ware made a big deal about his name, then she proceeded to refer to him as 'Greg' for the rest of the story. And the big clue? So obvious! So, the whole book was annoying and unbelievable.

Lovely

Only thing disappointing was learning my mistake in thinking this was the first book in a trilogy. Will definitely read more of her books!
