Web ID: 11774873Fun and entertaining!
This is not typically the type of book that I read but I thoroughly enjoyed dabbling in this book. The author takes you through various ways that people attempt to be creative and to seek things that bring them joy. She goes and speaks with people from a variety of backgrounds all across the world and was intentional about trying to figure out through her experiences the best ways to pursue a joyful existence. It was great to hear from creative designers, architects, artists, psychologists and people from all walks of life sharing their experiences and the author weaving their thoughts together in a highly entertaining cornucopia. Highly recommend to anyone!

Making the Intangible Tangible
"How do tangible things create an intangible feeling of joy?" p 4 In "Joyful," designer and blogger of "The Aesthetics of Joy," Ingrid Fetell Lee, tells how to design our surroundings to spark joy in our lives. The book is divide into chapters delineating ten ways to use shapes or color to bring the expansive feeling of joy into our lives. The ten ways include creating feelings of energy, abundance, freedom, harmony, play, surprise, transcendence, magic, celebration, and renewal in our surroundings. Specific examples of the concepts are given. For example, using polka dots on a throw pillow makes the viewer think of bubbles, giving us feelings of energy (Are the bubbles gonna pop?) and playfulness (Didn't we all love blowing bubbles as kids?) Lee is a decent writer as well; I have several pages of notes that I took while reading the book simply b/c I really liked how she expressed herself. This was good book to read in the midst of grey, cold winter, and I happily give it a solid 4 stars.
