NATIONAL BESTSELLER! A twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history, from the author of The Lost City of Z. NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST! In the 1920's, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. Look for David Grann's new book, The Wager, coming in April 2023!

Important book about a horrifying situation

This book was very well written and seemed similar stylistically with the Devil in the White City except for a difference in the setting and people and the pace of this book seemed to go faster. I had never heard of the Osage tribe or anything about what was described in this area in the early 1900s but it is important for us to be aware of how low people can go when they worship greed. It was a very interesting retelling of events that keeps your attention and is well written for anyone who enjoys good writing. Hopefully if these stories are read and shared, then the situations described in here can be highlighted so that they will not happen again. Overall, a good work that I wish was fiction.

Great read, with pictures of actual characters

I thought the book was a great read. The author was able to tell the story from multiple viewpoints to get a better idea of what people experienced. I did hope to have more information regarding the main character Mollie, or toward the end with the stories of other Osage Indians. I would recommend this book for anyone looking at more information regarding the history of the American Indians in Oklahoma, the black gold rush that changed their lives and culture, and how the FBI became an official entity with the help of White

Great book

This was extremely easy to read, but contained a lot of interesting facts about events in history that I didn't know much about.

Great read for true crime sleuths

The author David Grann wrote a perfect well written book about the reign of terror in Osage County,OK in 1920s. He did research on great facts and real information from archives that he uncovered more clues between connections between victims and suspects. It is worth reading!!!

Compelling WhoDunit

I actually had to read this for a college English class and do a report on it. At first I was unsure as this was my first college assignment ever, so I figured boring and difficult to read. I had no idea just how wrong I’d be. This book sucked me in. I even upon my actual assignment decided to do more research as this book is based on true events. This opened my eyes to a sad true of oppression, lies, manipulation, false trust, etc. I couldn’t stop reading once I started. This book might very well be the reason I love mysteries or thrillers. I hope this book gets more recognition than it has.
