Know My Name by Chanel Miller

I have so many thoughts that I'm not even sure how to make sense of them. This is a book that really needs to be read. This is more than just a story of survival and healing. This is a blinding reminder of how politics and government work against women. It shows the sad reality of victim blaming culture and how little progress we have actually made.

She Started A Revolution
The beginning of the book hit me hard. I realized this book was something I had to read while alone. Processing such events brings up a lot of emotions in which causes me to want to go into the life of the person and give them a big hug. When I read how Chanel did receive “hugs” from various individuals around the world, I was able to relax and let out a huge sigh. That was when I knew the the author was okay. We, as in global, was holding her up when she had thought she was the only one that experienced such inhuman acts and mental anguish. She was surrounded with love and humanity was saying something needs to be done. Chanel Miller was the one that started a conversation not only in California but in the United States as well as the world. She wrote a 12-page letter to her attacker in which was her victim impact statement. Katie J.M. Baker asked to release Chanel’s statement on BuzzFeed. It didn’t take long for it to go viral. People started to read the statement in various group gatherings such as a congressperson on the House floor. It was translated into Spanish, French, and other languages. The statement was also published in various entities such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. Then came the responses. Then came the “I see you” (i.e. “hugs”) directly to Chanel: letters, gifts, etc. Even Joe Biden wrote Chanel from the White House underneath his vice president title. “The statement had created a room, a place for survivors to step into and speak aloud their heaviest truths, to revisit the untouched parts of their past” (Miller, 2019, p. 252).

Best book for survivors.
I love Chanel and her book. Her story is incredible, and while reading this book I felt her hugging me saying “you are not alone.” The way she wrote about her journey…amazing.

Fantastic read
I read this for a Sociology class, but had known the story before starting it and I'm so glad I read it. This story is both beautiful and heartbreaking and badass at the same time. It takes the reader into the mind of a survivor, especially one in the public eye, and makes us see the pure agony and intensity of sexual assault. For those that are survivors it gives insight to emotions they know well. and for those who haven't experienced this it took on a whole new meaning. I was captivated by Miller's writing and agonizing honesty from cover to cover. If you have any hesitation to read a story like this, read it, you will not be disappointed or feel like time was wasted

This book has the power to change the world.
This book has the power to change the world. Chanel Miller is an inspiration to millions worldwide who have been sexually assaulted and have been driven into silence. Chanel has spoken for those who have not been able to speak for themselves. She has advocated and used her voice to make an incredible impact. She cannot turn back the clock on what has happened to her, but she can hopefully change the course for someone else moving forward. This book is incredible.
