13 years agoFun way to learn the math facts
I was looking for fun ways to help my 1st grader memorize her math facts and so far this is working for us. The first time we played it through, it was anything but "fast paced". Every time we found a "pop" card I groaned inside. I hated dumping my collection back in and starting over, not because I wanted to win but because it made the "fast paced" game drag to nearly an hour. We decided to modify the rules for future games - a "pop" card is now a good thing to get since it counts as two gumballs instead of one. My only real complaint about the game is the limited number of math facts. The facts only go up to a SUM of 10. That means that a lot of the 1 - 10 math facts are missing; 1+10, 6+6, etc. If the sum would be greater than 10, it's not included in the set. I would strongly suggest that Learning Resources produce a "supplement" pack for the missing math facts, all the way up to 12+12. As it is, I may just end up using a sharpie to change some of the easier facts to ones she needs to learn.

Thank you for your review. You can shortened versions of game play by winning when you collect 10 cards or setting up a timer. Thank you for your suggestion about adding a supplement pack. We are actually currently working on creating bonus content with more facts to use when playing this game and the bonus content will be available shortly on the product page on our website. The bonus content will be available to print out and cut out at home. We did consider using all facts up through 12+12 when we created the game, but there would be over 150 cards needed which would have affected the price point (and we keep all of our Pop games the same price since they all include 100 cards) so we just picked fewer facts to include in this game. We love your Sharpie idea! Another idea would be to write on the colorful side of the card and create double the facts!

13 years agoGumballs + Math = Fun!
My 5 year old may just have started Kindergarten, but I can tell already he is going to need a push to do homework and learn. He is definitely smart but also lazy so I know I have to be creative when coming up with "homework" practice for him. Right now I use incentives, like candy and iPad time for him to work on worksheets but that is only going to last so long. The Learning Resources "POP for Addition" game is a fun way to get kids to work on math problems while playing a game! It includes 90 addition and subtraction problems on little cardboard gum balls and then 10 POP cards for a spin on the game. To play you spin the spinner and pick 1-3 gumballs to solve. For each one you solve you keep, putting the others aside to practice later. The goal of the game of course is to collect the most gumballs. The POP cards allow you to put a spin on the game, with suggestions for gameplay on the box. Everything stores nicely in the sturdy cardboard box. Its funny how something so simple can be so appealing to kids. The gumballs (cards) are bright and perfectly sized for little hands. This is definitely a fun way for kids 6 and up (or sooner if you want to start) to start working on their math problems!

I like that this game made math facts fun. My children have had fun playing this together before starting our school work in the morning. There are a few ways to play this game; however, we like to play with the original rules without the stopwatch.

14 years agoFantastic Math Tool
Math was a subject that I always dreaded when I was in school. Teachers made it boring and never seemed to thoroughly explain the process. When my own children started school, I wanted to ensure that Math was an enjoyable subject for them. I have tried the traditional flash cards and workbooks but the kids seemed to despise the activities after a few sessions. Over this past summer, my kids attended the E.S.P. program provided by our local elementary school while I worked. They did a lot of educational activities with the kids but it's normal for students to lose some of what they had learned the previous year. My oldest son started the 3rd grade this year and I knew they'd soon be diving into multiplication as well as division. He had a good grasp of his math facts at the end of 2nd grade but over the summer, I noticed he had lost some of the quickness. We let the kids choose at least one activity every evening as a family event. After the game arrived, my youngest wanted to play POP for Addition and Subtraction simply based on the fact that he thought it was a real gumball game. When he found out that there was some math involved, he actually became even more excited to play. He loved collecting as many gumballs as possible. By the end of the game, he was flying through the facts and I was impressed that his critical thinking skills had increased tremendously. He was quickly recognizing that 4+3 was the same as 3+4 and so on. There are two levels of play as well as several alternative ways to make the game more fun and challenging based on your child's skill level! In Level 1, each player spins the spinner and removes that number of gumballs from the box. Each fact correctly solved is kept while incorrect answers result in "un-popped" cards that are placed in a separate pile. If a "POP!" card is drawn, all gumballs earned are returned to the box. The game ends when all gumballs are drawn from the box. The player with the most gumballs wins! Level 2 helps test older children's skills by requiring each player to name 1, 2 or 3 math facts (determined by the spinner) to name math facts that have identical sums as the gumball drawn from the box. For example, if a 2+2 is drawn, the sum is 4 so to keep the gumball, correct answers would be 6-2, 8-4, 3+1, etc. Alternative manners of play could include a timer, first player to 10 gumballs wins or even use the "POP!" card to take the other players' gumballs! Add your own variations to make it even more fun! We plan on keeping this game until my youngest son has the math skills mastered and then we'll donate the game to the school to help others!

Great for young math learners!!
My 5 year old son loves this game! It is the last thing he wants to do before bed and the first thing he wants to do in the AM. It is a great way to practice a lot of basic addition and subtraction problems that doesn't involve worksheets. Two things to note: (1) doesn't involve any numbers greater than ten, so it really is appropriate for a very narrow range of children, (2) it involves a *lot* more addition than subtraction, making it a less effective teaching tool for kids who need more practice with subtraction.
