A "genuinely scary" horror debut written in "prose so beautiful you won't want to rush" about a boy who transforms into a monster, a monster who tries to be a man, and the people who love him in every form he takes Ana Reyes Grieving mother Magos cuts out a piece of her deceased eleven-year-old son Santiago's lung. Acting on fierce maternal instinct and the dubious logic of an old folktale, she nurtures the lung until it gains sentience, growing into the carnivorous little Monstrilio she keeps hidden within the walls of her family's decaying Mexico City estate. Eventually, Monstrilio begins to resemble the Santiago he once was, but his innate impulses - though curbed by his biological and chosen family's communal care - threaten to destroy this fragile second chance at life. A thought-provoking meditation on grief, acceptance, and the monstrous sides of love and loyalty, Gerardo Samano Cordova blends bold imagination and evocative prose with deep emotional rigor. Told in four acts that span the globe from Brooklyn to Berlin, Monstrilio offers, with uncanny clarity, a cathartic and precise portrait of being human.

THEY GROW UP SO FAST

A little boy dies; his mother removes a piece of his lung, puts it in a jar, and feeds it. It begins to mature...it turns sentient...it grows a face and a tail...then teeth...arms and legs...the power of speech, and a vocabulary...and then, most troubling of all: it develops a ravenous appetite for raw meat--animal and otherwise... The shocks and surprises in "Monstrilio" sneak up on you quietly and unexpectedly--Cordova telegraphs nothing--and you may find yourself re-reading certain passages just to make sure you weren't imagining things. And you'll ask yourself: what kind of otherwise sane and sensible people would respond to Monstrilio--the name he's been given--the way his "parents" and their friends do here? (Sometimes, they accept his "transgressions" in such an offhand, boys-will-be-boys way that they might as well be Morticia and Gomez and Uncle Fester discussing Pugsley's latest prank.) It's a story of family, loss, and unconditional love; touching at times and remarkably funny at others. Surreal, suspenseful, and altogether strange, it may be the most unusual book you'll ever read--and you'll want to read it to the end.

A tender horror story

Monstrilio tells the story of Magos and Joseph, who suffer the loss of their son, Santiago. In her grief, Magos cuts off part of Santiago’s lung, secretly feeding it in hopes that it will grow into something new. Enter Monstrilio, the monster-turned-boy who everyone wraps themselves around to love and protect. Gerardo Sámano Córdova accomplished writing a heartfelt horror story. I was equal parts terrified and enamored while reading about sweet Monstrilio. I love how each character advocated for him in their own way. I love how he advocated for himself. This story is a beautiful lesson on being human, and who we are destined to be vs. others’ destinies for us.

Unique and Heartbreaking!

Must read for 2023! A grieving Mother willing to go to extensive measures to keep her deceased son alive. I don't want to leave any spoilers but the story is unique, heartbreaking, terrifying and full of fully developed characters. Each character is filled with emotions that are easy to relate to and feel their grief or trauma. I am not sure if it truly fits in the horror category as much a psychological trauma or drama. Author Gerardo Samano Cordova did a excellent job creating a unique read! Thank you to Zando and NetGalley for the ARC in return for my honest review.
