In this delightful sequel novella to the New York Times bestselling Sorcery of Thorns, Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas must unravel the magical trap keeping them inside Thorn Manor in time for their Midwinter Ball! Elisabeth Scrivener is finally settling into her new life with sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn. Now that their demon companion Silas has returned, so has scrutiny from nosy reporters hungry for gossip about the city's most powerful sorcerer and the librarian who stole his heart. But something strange is afoot at Thorn Manor- the estate's wards, which are meant to keep their home safe, are acting up and forcibly trapping the Manor'' occupants inside. Surely it must be a coincidence that this happened just as Nathaniel and Elisabeth started getting closer to one another... With no access to the outside world, Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas - along with their new maid Mercy - will have to work together to discover the source of the magic behind the malfunctioning wards before they're due to host the city's Midwinter Ball. Not an easy task when the house is filled with unexpected secrets, and all Elisabeth can think about is kissing Nathaniel in peace. But when it becomes clear that the house, influenced by the magic of Nathaniel's ancestors, requires a price for its obedience, Elisabeth and Nathaniel will have to lean on their connection like never before to set things right.

Sweet, warm and funny

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc! The book you didn't know you needed. I read Sorcery of thorns recently so as soon as I finished it, I started Mysteries of thorn manor. God, this book completely melted my soul. I loved it so much, especially seeing how much the book delves into Silas and Elisabeth's relationship. With Sorcery of Thorns I couldn't stop laughing and with this novel the same thing happened to me. It's sweet, it's warm, it's funny and it's amazing. The companion novella that a book as wonderful as Sorcery of Thorns needed. Margaret Rogerson is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Whimsical, creative, and just a touch of darkness.

'Mysteries of Thorn Manor' is the follow-up novella to 'Sorcery of Thorns' and while I realize I've spoiled a bit of book one for myself, admittedly I'm even more eager to read it than I was before. This author's work is well-rounded, filled with whimsy where it fits, remarkable creativity, and just the right amount of dark, foreboding energy. While there's plenty of familiar themes incorporated within the world-building, the details really shine. Specifically, I found the way the grimoires.. and in general.. magic just left to its own devices for too long, was brilliantly handled. I adore the concepts of space and time.. and the chaotic nature of Rogerson's magic. Nathaniel is lovely and just my type. He's got the tragic backstory, he's armored with deflection through humor, and he's been left damaged by his past. Damaged, but not broken. Elisabeth, while occasionally displaying traits I'm not wild about in female leads, is still a great character. She's kind and warm, mostly relatable, and has a tendency to sometimes take the blunt approach to a problem. The latter of which is really opposite her usual behavior and gives her a streak of unpredictability I quite enjoy. All that aside, for some reason Silas is still my favorite character in the story. His actions are in direct conflict with everything he says of himself. Even his darker truths have origin in loyalty, making his choices about how to carry out what he needs to do completely palatable to me. Perhaps strangely, I'm deeply moved by him and I really hope there will be another story to come. There certainly seems to be room for one at the end of the novella. Though I think I own all of Rogerson's books, in some cases.. more than one copy, this is the first of them I've read and I absolutely loved it. (I received this title as a gift. All opinions are mine and freely given.)

A quck catch up!

The beautiful cover perfectly matches this author’s fantastical style of writing. It’s been a little while since I read A Sorcery of Thorns, but it all came rushing back in the first few pages. The author weaves a tale between Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas that leaves me feeling like Elisabeth may have more than one beau. What that just my imagination? There seems to be a lot of hand kissing and declarations of affection. If so, then Elisabeth will have one busy future! I will admit, once my brain went in that direction I did start to question things. Regardless, it was certainly interesting! Just in case you were unaware, a novella is a short story. This one was about 188 print pages or 105 on my kindle, which is quite short. The story didn’t feel short though, it was very well rounded and quite complete. I just took a look at it on Amazon and I do feel like the kindle price may be a bit expensive for what you get though. This is a light-hearted bit of fun and unless you’re a super-fan, you may want to wait until it goes on sale. If you are that super-fan and have been jonesing for another Margaret Rogerson story then jump on this one. It will give you a quick fix that will leave you wanting more. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review and it was honest.

Short but excellent

Once again, Ms. Rogerson has delivered. It was wonderful revisiting the characters from Sorcery of Thorns. I will admit that when I pre ordered I was expecting a full length sequel, this is really more of an extended short story. But the ends left tantalizingly loose at the end of this story give me hope that there is even more to come.

PERFECTION

Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a requested copy for review. All opinions are my own. This was just perfect. Fan service at its best! We drop in on Nathaniel, Elisabeth, and Silas and see how they’re doing a few months after the events of Sorcery. We get adorable romantic content, sweet and poignant moments, some low stakes drama with the manor, and just overall everything you’d want out of a story this short. I love Nathaniel and Silas and Elisabeth so freaking much. I would have taken much more, but I’m happy with what we got. “This was one of the things she loved best about books. She might never know who had written the dedication, or how long ago, or to whom, but she could briefly clasp hands with them across eternity, a chance meeting of souls made possibly by their shared love of a story.”
