"Tallamy lays out all you need to know to participate in one of the great conservation projects of our time. Read it and get started!" Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction Douglas W. Tallamy's first book, Bringing Nature Home, awakened thousands of readers to an urgent situation: wildlife populations are in decline because the native plants they depend on are fast disappearing. His solution? Plant more natives. In this new book, Tallamy takes the next step and outlines his vision for a grassroots approach to conservation. Nature's Best Hope shows how homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Because this approach relies on the initiatives of private individuals, it is immune from the whims of government policy. Even more important, it's practical, effective, and easy - you will walk away with specific suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard. If you're concerned about doing something good for the environment, Nature's Best Hope is the blueprint you need. By acting now, you can help preserve our precious wildlife - and the planet - for future generations.

Required reading

The material in this book, and other books by Tallamy, should be the cornerstone of our public education system. Without the implementation of the suggestions in this book, we will become just another failed human civilization.

The Conservation Primer

Tallamy's writing style continues to inform and draw you in a way that feels like talking to a friend who is passionate about a topic and wants to share information they think you will find both interesting and useful. This installment is a bit heavier than Bringing Nature Home, without becoming overwhelmingly so. Loved it.

Micro level conservation, mega view history

I heard this book recommended on a podcast so decided to give it a read. Approximately 75% of the book is about the history of conservationism, how humans are ruining this planet and dooming ourselves, and the interdependence of humans with the natural world many of us have lost touch with. The background information is interesting even though if you are interested enough to invest time in this book, the author is probably already "preaching to the choir." The author talks about creating a "Homegrown National Park" where individuals modify their yards to make them more hospitable to insects, birds etc. I love this idea, and wish the book concentrated more on the "how to" of this topic and less on the "why."
