Witty Banter for the Win

This is the second book in the Merriwell Sisters. Although I enjoyed the first book, I liked the second book even more. I thought that the writing was witty and well done. I enjoyed both the female and male leads. They have strong personalities, are funny and they have great chemistry together. There were a couple of other story lines going on besides the romance. I thought that the story lines weaved themselves well and laid down some of the ground work for the third installment. When it comes to the spicy scene, I think the author does a great job with it. The scene is not corny, but it is also not super explicit. This is a slow burn, so it only comes at the end of the book. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this historical romance and I will be picking up the third book, Never Wager With a Wallflower, which comes out November 7th. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves to read a good romance novel. Thank you netgalley and St Martin's press for a copy of the e-book in exchange for an honest review.

So well-written and entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and plan on re-reading it soon. The writing and the dialogue is brilliant! This is the second book in a series, but I had no trouble in following the plot. Diana, the heroine of this book, is the sister of the heroine from the first book. Her sister married Giles' best friend. Giles Sinclair has a problem. His father dies unexpectedly which makes Giles the new Duke of Harpenden. Giles, however, thinks that he is not the legitimate heir and fears blackmail - which happens. Diana is a journalist and is very good at rooting out things that people would rather stay buried, Giles asks her to help him discover the secrets behind his parentage and hide them, for the sake of the dukedom and the many people who depend on it. His father's brother is next in line after him, and is a drunk and a spendthrift. I enjoyed every page of this extremely well-written and entertaining book. I received an e-ARC of this book from the publisher St. Martin's Press via NetGalley, and voluntarily read and reviewed it.

Not as good as the first in the series

Giles Sinclair’s father is the Duke of Harpenden. Both men hate one another. The Duke has never been a good father to him. The Duchess has passed away. Both men are hiding a “Dirty Secret” that would create a terrible scandal should it become known. When the Duke announces his engagement to a rather dim-witted girl, Giles is shocked and afraid for the life she would live. But, the Duke dies suddenly before the marriage can occur. Giles is now the Duke and learns that his father was incredibly wealthy and also very selfish to others. Miss Diana Merriwell writes articles for the gossip column of “The London Tribune.” She also harbors a secrets that could cause a huge scandal should it be known. Her father was not a good man and her earlier life was difficult. When her sister married an Earl, she and her other sisters came under his care. The Earl is good friends with Giles and when Diana and Giles meet somewhere, they always spar. I really loved the first book of this series and found the humor to be great. This book, however, was too full of angst and nail-biting. Diana and Giles have an attraction to one another but it got tiring as one or the other constantly tried to have the upper hand in the relationship. The secret that Giles tried to discover could have and should have been found much sooner. That is why this book dragged for me. My favorite character by far is Dalton and I hope the next story in the series will be about him. But as he is not a Merriwell sister, I fear I shall be disappointed. Maybe the author will include him in the story again at some point. Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Such a great series!

[I received a free electronic review copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.] 5 stars = Outstanding! Loved this story and this sequel! The main characters are great, and bickering/banter hiding deeper feelings is one of my favorite things in a romance novel. Can't wait to see what is next for the Merriwell Sisters and their families! Highly recommend this series. (sex)

Witty repartee and romance

Never Rescue a Rogue is the second book in the clever and romantic series The Merriwell Sisters by Virginia Heath. Not only is this book a historical romance, but it is also a romantic comedy, one which is actually funny. In the first book we were introduced to the oldest Merriwell sister Minerva. This time around the story is centered around Diana, the prickly middle sister who has a secret life she keeps from her siblings. I really liked the first book, but I loved this one! Everyone thinks that Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair are just perfect for each other. They, however, only put up with each other to keep the peace, as Giles is the best friend of Diana's brother-in-law. Their pointed barbs cannot mean they are secretly attracted to one another...can't they? Besides, Giles loves his life as a bachelor, and Diana loves her job working for the newspaper; she vows to never get married, as she enjoys her freedom. As it just so happens, they each have a secret they cannot reveal. When Giles' father, the hateful Duke of Harpenden, dies, Giles just knows someone will discover the secret of his parentage and attempt to blackmail him. And who appears to do just that but his evil Uncle Gervais. If Giles loses the dukedom, all those who depend on it will be ruined. Diana, the "nitpicking grammarian" and news bloodhound, is his best hope of finding proof before Gervais does. Will their bickering drive them apart as they work together, or actually bring them closer? If you enjoy romantic stories with witty banter and totally enchanting characters, you will adore this book as much as I did. The story was a lot of fun, but it was the lead characters and engaging repartee that made it special. Diana told her family that she was a grammarian at the newspaper where she worked, but they suspected she wrote the gossip column. Little did they know she was actually the Sentinel, a reporter who digs up dirt and exposes criminals. They would be livid if they knew the danger she put herself in! She was one tough cookie; she had to be with the criminal father the siblings had. With the experience she had with men in the past, marriage wasn't something she was interested in. Giles seemed to be a jovial, carefree and fun loving bachelor. However, his father was a cold and unloving parent; when he died no one shed a tear for him. The Duchess was hateful to Giles before she died years ago. On her deathbed, she told him the truth of his parentage. His father was rich, but didn't take care of his tenants on his estates. Giles was afraid if the rumor about his parents was true and he lost the dukedom to Gervais, once again the tenants would be neglected. He knew Diana would be able to help him track down clues. In the past Diana and Giles acted like they found each other extremely vexing. And they actually were vexing, but it hid their attraction. Their time together forced them to discover their true feelings. I totally fell in love with Giles when he realized how he really felt...and actually confessed instead of keeping it to himself. I just about swooned! The heat between them was extremely hot, yet funny and sweet. The secondary characters were so incredible. Once again, I absolutely adored Dalton the butler, with his scrimshaw peg leg, a missing eye and mangled hand. Oh, and his ever present pistol. This time around I adored youngest sister Vee, as well. She was whip smart, but a rather inept chaperone. I cannot wait for her story. I may be wrong, but I do believe I just might know who her paramour will be... I am totally enjoying this series. I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Sweet & Swoony

I love the continuation of a good series. Never Rescue a Rogue was just that. Giles and Diana's story is a fun one of friendship, banter and eventually swoony romance. You can tell from the beginning that there's more to their relationship than what initially meets the eye but it takes them a while to give in to their true feelings. Giles has a battle to determine his status as the new duke and Diana is the daughter of a known forger. They've been friends who banter for a bit, but while working together to try to track down a mystery, they are brought together and find they share more than friendship. I really enjoyed the storyline to this book. In addition, the characters were well developed and detailed. Everything flowed well and made for an enjoyable read. Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.

Absolutely perfect!

*****5 Stars! “If you are brave enough to wield it, the truth is always the most powerful weapon against evil.” First I would like to thank St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read an arc of this wonderful book! I am honored to have been given the chance to read it and give it my honest review. Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair only tolerate one another for the sake of their nearest and dearest. Everyone believes that the two of them are meant to be together, but Diana and Giles know that their shared barbs come from shared disdain only--not hidden attraction. Diana loves the freedom of working at the newspaper far too much to even consider giving it up for marriage, and Giles appears to be happily married to his bachelor lifestyle. Though it does seem the two of them share one thing in common--the secrets they can’t risk escaping. When Giles’ father, the curmudgeonly Duke of Harpenden unexpectedly meets his end, it’s only a matter of time before someone comes crawling out of the woodwork who knows the truth of his only son’s birth. As the threat of blackmail suddenly becomes real, Giles must uncover the truth of his percentage first, or else he and all those who depend upon him will be ruined--and dogged bloodhound Diana is his best hope at sniffing out the truth. As Diana and Giles wade further into his family’s past, the attraction that the two of them insisted wasn’t there proves impossible to ignore. Soon, the future of the Sinclair estate isn’t the only thing on the line. Never Rescue a Rogue was everything that I expected it would be and more! It was the perfect sequel to Never Fall For Your Fiancée and I enjoyed every moment of it. The moment I began this book I was sucked into it just as I was with the first, eager to see what would become of Giles and Diana. The pacing of this story was done very well, it was a very easy and swoon worthy read! This book had me on the very edge of my seat and each time I reached the end of a chapter I found myself eagerly moving onto the next without stopping. Giles and Diana had such a natural and easy banter that only kept building up their chemistry and romantic tension. I enjoyed how well they both seemed to suit one another like two halves of a whole and them denying their feelings for one another only made the build up of their relationship that much more enjoyable when it finally came to a head. I absolutely adored the humor in this book! Not only was it charming, sweet and absolutely adorable, it had such a wonderful witty and sarcastic edge to it. The snarky remarks that flew back and forth were so well placed and timed, which I adored. I love being able to come back to the world of this book, once again the author put in so much beautiful detail that I felt thoroughly immersed. I really enjoyed discovering more of Giles and Diana’s personalities and lifestyles through this book, I was even pleasantly surprised to find myself relating to Diana in some way. I found her to be a very admirable character and I love her constant desire for truth and setting things right. She might have been stubborn and set in her ways about things, but that only made her more interesting and enjoyable as a character. I also enjoyed how noble and gentlemanly Giles was, always putting others before himself and wanting to see those he cared for safe. It was such an absolute joy to be given the chance to read this book! This is a book I would highly recommend to anyone who not only loved the first book but who harbors a great love for historical romances that will have you swooning and leave you wanting more. I cannot wait for the next book and I look forward to seeing what will become of Vee Merriwell in her story!
