So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral . . . for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be. Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are.

On the Come Up

The book On The Come Up tells a story about a girl named Bri. She is a 16 year old girl who dreams of becoming like her father. A rapper. She goes back and forth between fighting if she should follow her rapping dreams or give up. I thought the book was pretty good. At times it would get boring, but then it would pick back up and get interesting again. I really liked the book because it had lots of detail and was related to teens' lives nowadays. I disliked how long the book was. It took me a long time to get through it. A quote that really stood out to me was “Look, you can't be worried about what folks think... There will always be someone with something to say, but it doesn't mean you gotta listen.” I recommend this book to teenagers and music lovers.

Music to my ears

Centering around a young girl’s dream to become a rapper, this loose sequel to "The Hate U Give" has something for everyone, even those who’ve never heard a verse. Wrapped in layers of important topics, "On the Come Up" takes on race, poverty, and the aftermath of the events of "The Hate U Give" in the community while bringing just as much emotional weight as its predecessor with the same incredible characterization and approachable narration. However, those many topics, each given their time to be addressed, leave too little time for a satisfying ending and inevitably left the last few chapters feeling somewhat rushed. But perhaps that’s only a statement to how much I wanted to stay with Brie and see where she ended up. Nevertheless, the narration of the audiobook makes reading this work of art a fully-rounded experience. Not only is it a joy to hear the narrator, Bahni Turpin, spit verses, but her spot-on voices were like music to my ears and just as good as any full-cast recording. I rated "On the Come Up" 4.5 out of 5.

Fantastic story

amazing work Angie Thomas!!! It was a little slow in some places, but man what a beautiful piece of literature! I could picture and see every bit of the frustration Bri was feeling with her school and the way she, and her friends, were being treated. Its nearly impossible to keep your cool sometimes, take it from another hot head. And sometimes it feels like everyone hates you. I felt every bit of Bri's emotions. That is some amazing writing. I love how Angie described how easy it is to be taken advantage by another person. How Supreme wanted Bri to be something she was not. Im so glad that Bri stood up for herself and decided who she wanted to be. I love how strong she was regardless of what people thought of her. She had an amazing support system! Love love love this story

listen to the audiobook!

This book was a good start for Black History Month. I really appreciated this book very much. Like the other Angie Thomas books, it talks about hard situations, but also including the beauty and quirkiness of life. I honestly felt like the whole book was about Bri's character development. I love that it was careful, not rushed, and it wasn't just after one meaningful conversation. That's just very realistic to me. I appreciate that everything was included. Her experience at school, her friends, her family, her situation, and her passion were amazing tools to see how Bri will be. Also, I listened to the audiobok version. And I just truly appreciated that the narrator also rapped when Bri rapped. I just thought it was an amazing way to experience the book. Everyone should consider listening to the audiobook version too. There's nothing much I can say but I liked this book a lot. And it is amazing to see Bri's life.
