Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

Nothing is more important to Francis than her studies and getting into Cambridge—except maybe her secret passion for the podcast “Radio Silence” and her art. When she meets Aled, she feels like she can finally can be her true self. But when their friendship is shattered, Francis has to decide who she is going to be and how to help Aled… This book was a tough listen at times. It tackled identity, parental abuse, pressures from the school system, freedom to choose your future, friendships, romance, and more. I liked that it was about a friendship and not a romance. Downside was that the writing wasn’t as engaging as Oseman’s other works, the MC lacked agency for a long time, and I had no idea where the story was going for most of the book. I was also disappointed that the MC outed another character. There were some intense moments where I worried this would have a tragic ending but thankfully it concluded in a safe and satisfying way. The overall tone was pretty depressing though.

Just a review
I brought this book a while back when I was at the mall shopping at barbs and noble. It took me a while to finish it, because I couldn't complain get into it at first, but once I did it was great. It's a great book for teens as well.

I love this book SO MUCH!! It is my comfort book
I bought this book a couple months ago. Despite that and the book being 400 pages long, I have read it 3 times already and plan on more. It has become a comfort book for me. I have always wanted a close friendship and this gave me some of what I've been missing. I love Aled and Frances's relationship and how two people who have seen each other for ages realize their platonic soulmates. I love how well written it is. I have read many Alice Oseman books and she always seems to write in ways that I relate too so much. Her characters are always so well rounded and I love everything about the way this book was written. I love Universe City and how whimsical it is. I love how meaningful and well written it is in the story. I love everything about this book SO much and would definitely recommend if you love sweet relationships, real life problems for teens today being tackled, and just a really really good book.

I appreciate what this is for so many people...
"Radio Silence" is the type of book that sings in just the right context, a context that many have read it in, making it their favorite book of all time and building a wall of insurmountable hype surrounding it. Some YA stories are universal and some are better in their intended age range. And I believe that "Radio Silence" is the latter. And personally, I felt a little too old to hear this book’s magic. However, I am not too old to appreciate the heck out of it. I appreciate what Oseman does so well, namely, stories that involve diversity and representation without the story focusing on it exclusively. I also wholeheartedly appreciate that it’s a platonic-forward story—a rare breed especially for younger readers—where the main relationship is about friendship rather than romance. I appreciate that this book had one of the best mums in possibly all of literary history (and one of the worst). And I certainly appreciate how perfect the themes are for high school seniors and juniors and college-age kids. I also very much appreciated the audiobook version, which came highly recommended thanks to the podcast element, and is certainly worth the read. The narrator may not be the best at taking on personas for all the side characters, but she certainly nails Aled Last in a way I couldn’t have imagined reading in my own head. Unfortunately, I don’t so much appreciate that the overall impression of the book is so inextricably linked with the way people talk about it that hearing any kind of review will cause the story to lose much of the meaning it would have had by discovering it naturally. I also found the writing, at times, to be somewhat childish. Foreseeing many of the ‘twists’ long before they occurred while the main character did not resulted in Francis seeming overly naive at times. And Carol, although I was well-convinced of her villainy, seemed overdone and unbelievable at moments. I’ve also come to realize that, by no fault of the book, Oseman’s focus on fanfiction and fame culture just might not be my foray. And as much as I love a lot of what she does, I may never truly love her books as much as others do. I rated "Radio Silence" 3.5 out of 5 stars.
