What is Normal and waht is Wide?

Hi! I've bought a pair of this really nice Rockport's model, but it runs narrow. The fact is that the Rockport does not explain, what means wide, and there is no explain in the size chart for this. Another problem is the inches in the size chart: do the inches mean the length of the foot or of the insole. How is is to measure? I live in Russia so I cannot return the shoes because of the above mentioned problem.
