Sister Holiday, a chain-smoking, heavily tattooed, queer nun, puts her amateur sleuthing skills to the test in this "unique and confident" debut crime novel Gillian Flynn. When Saint Sebastian's School becomes the target of a shocking arson spree, the Sisters of the Sublime Blood and their surrounding New Orleans community are thrust into chaos. Patience is a virtue, but punk rocker turned nun Sister Holiday isn't satisfied to just wait around for officials to return her home and sanctuary to its former peace, instead deciding to unveil the mysterious attacker herself. Her investigation leads her down a twisty path of suspicion and secrets, turning her against colleagues, students, and even fellow sisters along the way. And to piece together the clues of this high-stakes mystery, she must at last reckon with the sins of her own past. An exciting start to a bold series that breathes new life into the hard-boiled genre, Scorched Grace is a fast-paced and punchy whodunit that will keep readers guessing until the very end.

Fun mind-blowing mystery set in NOLA -- brilliant

I bought this book because I saw the cover and saw that it was published by none other than Gillian Flynn, the mastermind behind Gone Girl. I am so glad I did because Scorched Grace is the best mystery I have read in years. Get ready to meet Sister Holiday, the punk nun who's about to rock your world with her sharp mind and a past that's as mysterious as the current crime of arson. She is the narrator and you are in her head for the whole book. It's wild. A New Orleans school is unraveled after unexplained deaths, and something bad is lurking in the shadows. Sister Holiday's got her nun's uniform and her game face on as she goes into amateur detective mode, trying to get to the bottom of it. As the plot thickens, the book goes into these surprise explorations of religion, love and labels. This isn't an average mystery -- it's got layers upon layers to peel back. But it is a really quick read and hilarious too. I couldn't put it down. Douaihy's got this poetic yet casual prose that'll sweep you off your feet while making you laugh out loud. It is seriously so funny at times. The city vibes are on point -- jazz, big personalities, steamy heat and all mood all the time -- that's what you'll find in NOLA. Sister Holiday is not your ordinary nun. She's got tattoos, she's punk, she is actually really faithful with her religion but she's all about shaking things up in the parish and her school. And the constant paradoxes are a big part of the rush of the book. The book is a rollercoaster -- it's thrilling, it's deep, it's sad, it's wickedly funny and OMG the ending. You'll never ever see that coming. You'll be hooked from page one. This mystery's off the charts good. It's got Sara Gran Claire Dewitt vibes and some Sue Grafton Kinsey vibes but there's really nothing like Scorched Grace. Get it now.

Incredible read!!!!

I can’t believe more people haven’t come back to leave a review! They were probably too out of breath from that ending!!!! First if all, this author can really write. You are not only visually stimulated with the active descriptions from the author, but all of your other senses are made present too! So much body and life built around this town and community. It was almost hard to read at certain points, because I felt so connected to the characters and story. Next I want to comment on some of the small nuggets of wisdom dropped throughout the book. I highlighted over ten passages with profound truths and takes on spirituality. Stunning. Finally I’ll say that the flow of the plot, entangled with the unraveling of Holidays past, makes the climax just creep up on you. I could have read hundreds more pages of this book. Love love. Must read.

5 Star Queer Detective

Picture a woman covered in tattoos with a gold tooth and candy red lipstick smoking a cheap cigarette. She is either playing the guitar or just got out of a bar fight and likely has a black cat named Voodoo following her around. Do you have the image in your head yet? Did you picture a Nun??!! If you didn’t, let me introduce you to Sister Holiday… She’s no Sister Mary Clarence (legendary fictitious nun from Sister Act) but she’s a close second! When mysterious fires break out at Saint Sebastian’s School, Sister Holiday uses her sleuthing skills to crack the case, despite all signs of arson pointing to her. During her investigation, the reader is intermittently introduced to Sister Holiday’s former life and we learn that no matter how far we try to out run our past, it will always catch up to us! The fires in this mystery/crime thriller set in New Orleans are not the only heat on this book. Scorched Grace burns with police brutality, LGBTQ injustice, infamous New Orleans weather trauma, and more. Margot writes these themes with grace, leaving the reader anticipating the next book in this heated and bold series!
