Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Web ID: 15843576Fantastic fairytale!
The world-building was detailed but developed slowly as I needed it. I enjoyed the fairytale feel of the forest creatures and the living grimoires. Elisabeth refused to back down when faced with challenges. She was willing to unlearn the prejudice taught to her and fight for what was right. Nathaniel’s sarcasm and dark humor drew me to him, and his hidden tenderness made him easy to love. Silas was surprisingly both lovable and terrifying. Fantastic tale!

Sentient books? Say less.
Sentient books? Say less. Sorcery of Thorns is a perfectly delightful world to escape into. It has the atmosphere and aesthetic of a dark academia novel without being overwhelmingly bleak. There were moments when I wanted it to have a little more bite, but I think it works well as is. This is a prime example of YA fantasy with characters who actually feel their age. Too often, when reading about sixteen- to eighteen-year-olds, I find they have the mentality of someone in their thirties. When that happens, it feels forced and awkward. The characters here, however, are firmly their ages—you get to see them learn and grow in a way that feels truly authentic.

Perfect book for us Book Lovers!
If you loved Harry Potter, this is the book for you! This story hit so close to home to us readers because it includes our 2 favorite things…fantasy and books! Sorcery of Thorns was an incredible read for me. Fantastic world building with easy to understand magic, the character development left me more and more attached to them with each page and the suspense led me to finishing this book in 2 days! Rogerson’s writing style had me in awe of so many points of this story. This book left me with a warm heart, in constant wonder at the characters and instantly wanting more of it! This book's highlight for me was Elizabeth not being the classic “short, weak and skinny girl”. Us tall girls need our spotlight! Everything about this story was so unique, a perfect book to read when in a slump and want something to inspire you to read again! Nathaniel brought some heroism, romance and some awesome magic to the table. But, the best thing that he brought was Silas! Hands-down favorite character of the book, Silas has me punching the air at some points!

Fun Young Adult Read
Rogerson created a really interesting and different world, full of magical books and library guards that simultaneously protect people from the books and protect those dangerous books from falling into the wrong hands. Although I really enjoyed the world-building centered around libraries and grimoires, I found the romance to be rather lacking. I was simply not sold that there was much chemistry between the leads and I did not fully feel that we completely knew Nathaniel (we knew of his hardships but I was left with a lot of questions, mainly, what does he do on a normal day? What do most sorcerers even do for normal people?). Overall, I thought it was more young adult friendly and had better world-building than An Enchantment of Ravens, which I had read just before this, but was similarly lacking in well-built romances. - Blatant Spoilers - I really just wanted to spend time with Silas and learn more about the demon world and the relationship between sorcerers and demons than watch the weird romantic tango between Nathaniel and Elisabeth. Also, I thought that the whole "Elisabeth is special and one of a kind" thing was a bit too blatant and I did not really buy that fact that she is the only person who can do that. But it could also be because I am so tired of that trope, I know a lot of people adore the "one of a kind" trope.

A magical story for book lovers
This book was such a joy to read. Elizabeth was raised in a library of magic and mystery. She is not like the other librarians though, the books seem to react differently around her. When she finds her mentor dead in the library hall, she is thrown into a battle with one of the book come to life. After fighting for her own life, she is accused of her mentor's murder and whisked off to the city, away from the only home she has known. Can Elizabeth prove her innocence and save other librarians from a similar fate? One of the things I really loved about this book was Elizabeth's journey of finding out that some of the things she was taught growing up may not be true. She goes through a journey of discovering who she can trust, and learns to trust her own instincts as well. I also very much enjoyed Elizabeth's fondness of books and libraries. It was a comforting type of familiar when she would talk about libraries and books. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, a strong female lead, and magic.

Fun fantasy starring a sword-wielding librarian
This is one of those books that's so consistently good from start to finish that it makes the writer in me envious and the reader in me delighted. From page one, the characters are distinct, charming, and compelling. The plot is twisty and clever without being hard to follow. The prose is lovely, with such vivid descriptions that I felt like I could close my eyes and see everything that was happening. I loved Elisabeth's and Nathanial's relationship. Seeing how they started out hating each other and ended up caring for each other so deeply was extremely satisfying. They were also hilarious together, with Elisabeth getting into so many ridiculous situations. I love when fantasy books have that sense of lightness, even amidst a lot of serious problems. It makes the book so fun to get lost in. Overall, this was one of my favorite books of the year and one that I can't wait to reread. Highly recommend!

LOOOOOOVE
my friend let me borrow this book. i immediately was attached. the world is so easy to understand, the concepts are understandable and yet so magical. there are not many characters included, this technique allows the author to go deeper into the main characters so by the end the reader is attached to them and understand them on a deeper level. the writing style is one like “the cruel prince”. a more formal first person POV. i was first very hesitant to read it, as it looks a little childish. but i assure you this book will have you crying your eyes out. it had me staring at my ceiling for a good 5 minutes with tears down my face. i loove love love love this book. the humor is also so enjoyable. if your looking for romance this book has a decent amount. it’s quite the slow burn, having not as much romance in the beginning but drastically changing in the middle-end. the plot is perfect. with plot twists that had me in so much shock i could not comprehend. i always find myself cackling as i’m reading. usually with long chapters. i always dread starting another chapter. but i physically could not put this book down. to sum it up, yes. get the book. it’s so good. it is child friendly, very humorous, has a decent amount of romance, the plot is just, delicious, characters are very well developed. everything about this book just yells perfection (at least to me). give it a try! i really recommend it.
