It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century- two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last. Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight. At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn't find true love. Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple's cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating.

Spare

Spare by Prince Harry begins well, but quickly falls into a complaining story of all the wrongs thrown on poor Harry, the second child of Princess Diana. Harry constantly bemoans the issue that he reigns as the “Spare” and not an important member of the royal family. All attention lands on the shoulders of William. Harry seeks attention by misbehaving everywhere. He marries an unacceptable woman, and then moves to the United States to live. Where is his loyalty for friends and family in England. Harry feels that the stress lands too heavily on him. The book pounds home the childishness of Harry, and Harry’s attempt to boost his income. Not an enjoyable book.

Excellent book!

I bought it last month and was very impressed with it. I've read it multiple times, hopefully there's book #2.

Well written page turner

I found this memoir such a compelling read. Funny and heartbreaking. Having estranged family is so difficult. Hopefully relationships can be mended, but sometimes they can’t. Beyond the “royal” story, his telling of his time in the military was fascinating and told with such passion! I wish Harry and Megan well wherever their path leads them. I wish them peace.

4 stars

Every story has a minimum of two sides; the bigger the family, the more they are in the public eye, the more that number grows. Spare goes into Prince Harry’s view of his life and the impacts and influences his family, and friends, have had on that life. It was eye opening to see his side of what he’s gone through and after finishing I wish I could experience similar accounts from the point of view of the others involved.

Hard to put down

I bought it a month ago and it was worth it. Prince Harry shares details from every part of his life. His goal to protect those loves and not turn a blind eye to how evil the media can be is heart warming. Preventing the deaths of anyone overwhelmed with lies and misperception is important and he seems to be the only one in the royal family that realizes this. All royal duties are important including the work Harry is doing right now.

Spare - anything but

I found this to be misinformation regarding what really happened. His reflection appears to be from someone who has false memories regarding his life. Princes Di love her sons and her actions radiated her love. You can say you’re a spare if you are from a family with to or more siblings. He shows a lack of empathy and has low self esteem of what he could have been or achieved.

I Do Like Prince Harry's Attempt To Set The Record

When it comes to the royal family, I had experienced a sense of warmth for them since childhood. My mom had mentioned after Princess Diana had married Prince Charles, she "followed" the couple by noting the same year their two children were born were the same year my brother and I were born (i.e. I was born the same year as Prince William and my brother was born on the same year as Prince Harry). When she told me this, I remember slowly smiling. I thought it was sweet. I thought their family were sweet. So I bothered me tremendously when I understood how the press was dismantling them and how they believed they had a right to write about the royal family regardless if what they wrote about was the truth. I have a "gentle" relationship with history. I say "gentle" because, yes, I did well in memorizing dates while in school and also was fascinated with knowing how people in the past had lived and established. So to know that some of what has been written about the royals from previous generations may have been "tampered" just for money, it's disheartening. I want to believe that what I had read about Queen Elizabeth and previous monarchs are all true. But now, I wonder what is all true. It's so sad. I do like Prince Harry's attempt to set the record straight. Unfortunately, I'm afraid, it has increased problems instead of settling them. More judgments, criticism, and family issues appeared to come as the result of the book. I remember hearing how someone had mocked that he written about his penis and his mother. When I heard that, I thought both "penis" and "mother" were connected and thought "What?" (as in why would he share such a thing). Then I read the book and said "Oh! Those were two separate topics." I wanted to read the book to get my own understanding instead of hearsay. Am I'm so glad that I did.

Amazing memoir

One of the most incredible autobiographies I have ever read, along with "Open" by Andre Agassi. Not surprising that both these authors employed the same ghost writer. This book is required reading for anyone with dysfunctional family dynamics, or has ever said of a famous person "why can't they just act normal?" Very turbulent narrative about how Prince Harry never adequately mourns his mother for literal decades.
