Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies (Hardcover) by Michael Ausiello I first heard of this book when I saw the preview of the movie of the same name starring Ben Aldridge and Jim Parsons. This is a memoir/love story recollection of the lives of Michael Ausiello - the founder and editor-in-chief of TVLine.com, a television website owned by Penske Media Company - and Christopher (Kit) Cowan, a photographer. After 13 years of an on/off relationship held together by the psychotherapist Tony Frankenberg, Kit is diagnosed with a rare form of a rectal neuroendocrine tumor. What follows is almost a diary - which includes flashbacks into their relationship - and recollections of Kit's struggle with the terminal disease. As the title warns you - the hero dies. Not only does Michael tell the story of his harrowing and challenging last year with Kit, but he also showcases the powerful bond between him and Kit. Instead of a tale of sadness and loss, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is an unforgettable, inspiring, and beautiful testament to the resilience and strength of true love. Narrated from Michael's first-person point of view, it's a sad but easy read. Ausiello's prose is filled with both humor and sadness. I didn't care for the great number of secondary characters - too many and not well-developed - but I loved the story. As a survivor of the AiDS crisis, I dealt with innumerable moments of loss and horrible end-of-life stories. I relived a lot of the plot. This book is a powerful tale of what we do for our loved ones, even if it means caring for them as they die.
