The Bridesmaids Union: A Novel by Jonathan Vatner

Web ID: 16376168Wild family drama
This book was wild! Highly recommend if you enjoy reading about dysfunctional families including between daughters and parents and between sisters. The description says it is a “captivating novel of family, Facebook groups, and bridesmaids gone rogue” and I would certainly say all of that is accurate. Overall a pretty fun summer read if you get sucked in by drama. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for the copy via NetGalley.

Bridesmaids, ungrateful brides and family
Iris has been a bridesmaid too many times and has felt taken advantage of. After the last wedding, her sister (the golden child in the family) announces her engagement and Iris is selected as the maid of honor. Iris needs to get her feelings out and she starts a Facebook group so she has an anonymous place to vent. It’s a private group and Iris puts every type of setting in place to ensure that no one she knows will be able to join the group. It turns into a great place for people to vent their frustrations. Surviving her spoiled sister’s plans seem to be even harder than she imagines. This was a nice take on family, weddings and social media. I enjoyed it very much.

Loved it!
Iris Hagarty is sick and tired of weddings - the expense, the stress, the bridezillas. Every time she turns around it seems like she is being asked to be in another wedding party, and shell out a small fortune. Her credit card is already maxed out, and her sister just announced she is getting married and guess who is going to be the maid of honor????? Jasmine has always been spoiled and a bit entitled and this wedding is sure to bring out all of her worst qualities as a bride. Because Iris has never felt like she had a voice, she starts a private Facebook group called "The Bridesmaids Union", where women like her can go to vent about their horrible wedding stories, and commiserate with each other. It is supposed to be a place to let off steam, and support each other, but when something goes terribly wrong and private posts get made public, friendships (and relationships) are put to the test...and not all of them will survive the fallout. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The posts in the Facebook group were hilarious, as were many other parts of the book, and this rom-com not only had comedy and romance, but a good storyline and a good lesson to be learned as well. I loved Iris and was really rooting for her. Her sister on the other hand was definitely a bridezilla. If you are a fan of chick-lit or rom-com's, then you definitely need to check this one out!

lots of humor, but not my favorite
The book was well written. I enjoyed the humor of the posts when Iris first started the Bridesmaids Union. But about halfway through the book, the humor seemed not to be as funny. I'm not sure if it was because it went on too long or if the humor seemed forced. I didn't dislike Iris, but I can't say she was a character that made me feel sympathetic. After a while, it seemed like she was whining too much. The storyline was entertaining, but I think it missed the mark a little. Too much politics were interjected, and they weren't smoothly done. They were way too obvious and disruptive. I'm surprised the editors left them in the book. The religious views are okay to include this if it flows with the story, but these seem to have been jammed in when convenient. Overall, the book was okay, but it missed the mark of being great. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Such a good read
I received an ARC copy of this book. I really enjoyed the book. Iris and Jasmine have an interesting relationship as siblings throughout this book. It goes from Iris being surprised at being the maid of honor in Jasmine's wedding to Jasmine presumably hating Iris over a Facebook group Iris created known as "The Bridemaids Union". It all worked out in the end as Jasmine and David split and Jasmine married Forrest, who incidentally is Iris' son's father. There are a lot of laughs in this book and I was totally rooting for Iris throughout. It's a pretty cute book.
