The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Starts of exactly like the movie with Daniel Craig & Rooney Mara did if I remember correctly. Very little deviation between the book and the movie throughout. Mikael Blomkvist who is a recently disgraced journalist convicted of libel is hired by Henrik Vanger to solve the mystery of the disappearance of his niece Harriet over forty years ago. Lisbeth had also been hired by Henrik's lawyer to investigate Mikael's character before they approached Mikael for the job. Eventually Mikael and Lisbeth end up working together to dive deeper to the Harriet mystery and the discovery of a series of murders among many other things. A very involved and very long book with so much going on. Of course there is lots of violence, graphic torture, graphic sex etc. which is mostly what you hear about these books. It would take me way too long to touch on everything to go any further and I just don't have enough left in me after finally finishing the book. Feels like I've been reading it forever I will say that this first book in the series seems to be more about Mikael Blomkvist than Lisbeth Salander. It feels like she is a secondary character, or maybe co-main characters. I imagine that in the preceding books that won't be so, even though I am aware that Mikael will be in the next couple of books.

I want to read for the first 100x over

It’s what turned me onto mystery and thrillers and Nordic Noir as a whole. It’s a shame Stieg passed away, his contributions to the literary world were huge. I wish I could have more of him.

WOW!

Wow! What a read. This book was a little slow to start. Takes place in Sweden. Once you adjust to this it is a fascinating read. Murder, serial killer, mafia, wrongs righted, growing of characters. An eclectic group of characters. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

An epic story

My daughter recommended this book some years ago. I was slow getting to it but I am glad I did. This is a very well written book with some of the tightest plotting and character development I've seen. I'll admit I'm at a loss to describe this. It starts a bit slowish and early on it seems to be a variation of the classic "locked room" mystery. A disgraced reporter, Mikael Blomkvist is hired by an aging industrialist to review the case of his long missing grand niece, Harriet Vanger. The author offers an engaging and thoroughly believable plot to start things off. Once the book gets it's motor running it simply takes off in a way that left me wide eyed. By the time I hit the half way point I really did have trouble putting the book down. The last half of the book is full of surprises, twists and turns that were very well handled. Overall because the story is told over a wide time range it had a kind of epic vibe. Highly recommended for anyone with a hankering for a good mystery.

Excellent read!

In my personal opinion, Lisbeth Salander is one of the best FMC in literature. As a character, she’s been through hell, through more trauma than any one person should ever experience. It’s left her damaged but absolutely brilliant and with a moral code that is the foundation of everything she is. She is far from the typical FMC, in many ways more villainess than heroine, but the reader can’t help but be fully invested in her story, rooting for her every step of the way. This is not a book for the faint of heart. It is deeply disturbing at times, very dark, and extremely intense. It does not shy away from the darkers parts of the world, nor should it. But it is highly intelligent, emotional, and incredibly engrossing.

Engrossing, fast paced read

Saw the movie and decided to try the book. Wound up buying the whole Millennium series (6 books). Each book carries on the original fierceness of purpose that the characters have in the first book. Love the detail of the stories, the complexities of the plots and the characters' continued growth. Parts are hard to read due to the abuse and violence depicted but definitely worth buying and reading.

Great for Audiobook

I loved this series on audiobook. There are a lot of characters and complicated story lines but the way that Larsson circles back and refreshes the reader adapts really well to the audio format. I never felt lost with any of the characters or their intentions. [I thought that the ones written by Larsson are better but they are all good.]
