A young New Yorker grieving his mother's death is pulled into a gritty underworld of art and wealth in this "extraordinary" and beloved Pulitzer Prize winner from the author of The Secret History that "connects with the heart as well as the mind" (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review). Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by a longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her- a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into a wealthy and insular art community. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention.

A Tale about Life, Loss & Art

I absolutely loved this masterpiece! It's a beautifully written coming of age story with lots of trauma and interesting characters and how we are connected to art in various ways. Is it lengthy and a bit long winded in the end? Yes, but I still loved it! Oh, I had a physical copy of the book but did go back and forth with the audio book and that made it highly enjoyable!

Beautiful Novel!

This was the first one of Donna Tartt's novels that I read, and I have to say her writing is beautiful. The writing is so intricate and finds unique ways to connect to the reader. Relationships between characters throughout the book and at the end are so complex and layered that it feels real. The Goldfinch is definitely one of my favorite novels!

amazing book!

I wanna be very honest, this is one of the best books I've read ever! Has beautiful writing, plenty of details but simple enough to understand. I highly recommend this book if interested in reading alot, normally this book would take a week or so. But so worth it!

LONG WINDED AUTHOR

I don't like to write negative reviews; however, I do want to be truthful in my opinion of a book. 1st of all let me say I buy all the books I review. I don't get freebees or feel obligated to write a positive review for fear of upsetting anybody. With that said, I couldn't get past the 1st chapter of this book without realizing that the author is long winded for no apparent reason or result. In the 1st lengthy chapter, after the met is bombed, a young person stumbles out of the building, not quite as upset as one would imagine a youngster who has not found his mother in the wreckage would be, only to have a big burly cop push him behind the yellow tape. Seems none of the multitude of firefighters, cops or medical personnel on scene even took an interest in his disheveled, bloody condition?? Based upon this lengthy 1st chapter experience, I realized that the following 600+ pages were going to be too long, too boring and too wordy and a waste my time. Naturally, I was disappointed after reading many positive reviews and the book's Pulitzer Prize award. But I have been disappointed in other award-winning books before as well. I applaud those who got through it..."You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!"

A compelling read

It's a very long story, with plenty of details, but in the end all of it seems useful to fully understand the main character. It's the first novel I read after a long sick leave, and it got me back into reading. It's sad and touching but in a good way.

Utterly amazing.

I absolutely fell head over heels with this book. It was incredibly well written and changed my perspective on reading all together. I read it years ago and it is still to this day my number one favorite. It portrays the emotions in such a raw, beautiful way. I can not stress enough how wonderful this book is.
