Mr. Rogers

One of my greatest childhood heroes is Fred Rogers. I so enjoyed getting to know more about the man behind the television screen. His dedication to helping children even without a camera on him was unwavering. He was human, with all the foibles that come from that, but he strove to be the best he could be. He accepted people, child and adult, right where they were. I was amazed by how many lives he touched personally. His friendships were many and most were lifelong. Oh, how I wish I had met the man! There was so much to contemplate and process but I finished the book so very glad for every moment. Audiobook: LeVar Burton was the perfect choice for the narrator!

What You See Is What You Get

This work is the story of how a scion of wealthy industrialists of Latrobe, Pennsylvania became a giant in and molder of children’s television. It is a fascinating story of a man on a mission to improve children’s worlds. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Rogers had ideas that children should be treated honestly, with respect, in language they can understand. Rogers is portrayed as the man seen on television. He really did pay attention, care about people, as demonstrated by a gesture of giving money to a mugging victim, just so he would know that someone loved him. True to his mission, though often operating on a shoestring he framed his program to his vision, not to conform to commercial standards., This book reveals little known facts. His grandfather was a Mr. McFeely (also his middle name), he created and operated many of the puppets himself and had some unsuccessful initiatives. His staff loved and was loyal to him. Urban legends are upended, such as he did not wear a sweater because his arms were covered with tattoos. Privileged from the need to earn a living, Fred is presented as a caring, authentic “what you see is what you get” individual who dedicated his life to improving lives. My family and I, who included those who had met Mr. Rogers as parents and a child, listened to an audio version of this book while on driving trips. Though long, it held our interest over several months. Drawn from interviews of many of Rogers’ workers and associates, it is informative, interesting and inspiring. Listen or read, savor and enjoy.
