and An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King's greatest literary achievement and (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series. A #1 National Bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King's most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead- The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake. Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came," The Gunslinger is "a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center" (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is "brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more" (Booklist).

Great Start!

Title: The Gunslinger Author: Stephen King Release Date: January 1st, 2016 Page Count: 284 Format: Audiobook Start Date: November 1st, 2017 and April 9th, 2023 Finish Date: November 11th, 2017 and April 29th, 2023 Review: Rowan is on a mission to find and bring down The Man In Black. Through this book we go through his journey and the people he meets along the way. Including his meeting Jake, And his learning to love the kid and wanting to protect him. I really enjoyed this book! I have to be honest, I watched the movie before I read the book. I loved the movie, but I'm so glad that I took the time to actually listen to the book as well. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. I have a feeling I'll be going through a wild ride! The only criticism I have is the over usage of names when they could have been replaced in some instances with he/she. The narrator of this book was amazing. He definitely knows how to draw an audience in and does so well. I loved how he gave the characters such fitting personalities. It made me enjoy the book even more! Of course, I fully recommend this book. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the books. I hadn't had access to the books before now. I'm so glad that I finally managed to get access to it and I will be finding a way to get ahold of physical copies of the book as well to go back and actually reading them.

The beginning of an epic tale

This is the first book in a seven-book series so it does a good job of setting up the series by explaining some of the backstory about why the gunslinger is on this quest, but nothing is resolved in this book. There is a lot of journeying through inhospitable territory and encounters with enigmatic characters. I still don't know what's going on, but Roland is an interesting mixture of medieval knight, western gunslinger, and avenging angel. You get glimpses of how Roland's world might intersect with ours, but nothing is explained yet. I hope to read the rest of the series to see Roland's further adventures.

Not Your Usual Stephen king

Usually, you'd see a name like Stephen King and assume horror, right? Well, this book has horror elements, but it's most certainly an adventure novel full of sci-fi and fantasy. The Gunslinger I'd personally label as the beginning of Stephen King's magnum opus. It kicks off a 7-book series, or technically a 9-book series if you include some filler stories, he ended up later writing, although not needed to enjoy the main story overall. It's a usual story of a disgruntled lonely man who ends up having to protect a young boy, Jake, but does not take the usual routes you'd expect. Roland typically wants to be kept to himself but has to end up coming to terms with that he has a larger role then he was said to be destined for. Having a personal attachment to the series, literally being named after Roland, I'm not afraid to say I'm proud of my namesake. If you are a fan of anything by Stephen King or want to begin reading something of his but don't want to be subjected to immediate horror, this is a must read, as it combines each story he had written up until the books original release in 1982. Each book makes you want to pick up the next. Gripping and emotional, you'll surely find a home in this strange, twisted, and beautiful world King has crafted. While not perfectly written, as it is one of his early works, it still does the job by telling the story it sets out to tell.

The Best Stephen King Book I've Read in a While!

A reason why The Gunslinger is a New York Times Bestseller is because it boasts some of the best characters in fantasy. Since this is the first instalment, it introduces us to the obsessive and lonely gunslinger, Roland of Gilead, and the innocent yet world-weary Jake of New York. And as we read they form a tender and loving relationship that is pivotal to all that follows. From the beginnings in the desert and through events and flashbacks we then visit the doomed town of Tull, visit Gilead, see the New York of Jake's when and finally travel through the mountains to the moment when Roland faces the most difficult decision of his life.

Fun ride

Review The Gunslinger, what a book. The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed. As the first line in the book, the reader is left wondering, who is the Man in Black? Who is the Gunslinger? All we know is that The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed. To me, this first sentence highlights the mindset that the Gunslinger has a single-minded determination, to find the Man in Black. The story introduces us to Roland Deschain, the gunslinger, and his adventures to find the man in black. During his travels he meets a man named Brown who lets him spend the night. Roland then tells the story of his travels to the town of Tull. The Gunslinger then proceeds to tell him that he was forced to kill the entire town. After leaving Brown’s house, the Gunslinger makes his way, until he comes across a boy in a house all by himself. This boy’s name is Jake. It is revealed that Jake was born in 70’s New York, and supposedly killed by The Man in Black. But Jake cannot remember the full details as his memory is fading. Jake then tags along with the Gunslinger towards where The Man in Black is. Jake and the Gunslinger then camp out until later that night while Jake is asleep, Roland goes to meet the prophet that tells him, in order to reach The Man in Black, you must eventually kill Jake. The Gunslinger doesn’t take lightly to this fact as Roland has started to care for the boy. Eventually Jake and the Gunslinger meets with The Man in Black, follows him, until Jake falls into a hole where Roland holds on to Jake for dear life, until Jake reveals that he knew that the Gunslinger would try and kill him. Following that, Jake lets go and falls to his death. Having read the book you will understand that King can create a new world like no one else. He can create a setting with a line or two. He can do this by using oddly specific adjectives I haven't seen any other author use. That’s not the only thing though, the characters are just great. You really get to fall in love with Jake and the Gunslingers relationship through the entire story. Finally, this is the first book in a series! King expertly set up the sequel. All in all, this is a great book. I recommend it to anyone who knows how to read.

Interesting book

The Gunslinger by Stephen King is a fantasy/western fiction novel about Roland Deschain, also known as the Gunslinger. Roland is looking for a tower to show him the meaning of life and death. He comes across a young boy, and begins to feel for him, during this he starts to remember little parts of his past. I enjoyed the book because the of the action and storytelling, then you should read this book because it is fill with both action and storytelling.
