THE INVENTION OF WINGS by Sue Monk Kidd A blend of fact and mostly fiction, this is the story of Sarah Grimke, an early abolitionist and suffragette, and her “personal servant” Hetty/Handful. My hesitation at giving this a higher rating is due to the implausible storyline. Despite Sarah’s feelings/objections to slavery (which yes, at the time it was revolutionary), she really doesn’t go out of her way to do anything to help Hetty’s circumstances. It felt as if the author was equating slavery with antebellum patriarchy by showing their supposed parallels. Oof. Also, a white author writing first person perspective/POV of an enslaved black person just feels… wrong. On the surface, this was an interesting and well written story. However, it doesn’t get any deeper than other (better) books that address the same themes. Many have enjoyed it though, so don’t let my review deter you from giving it a read. Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️
