The Nature of the Beast is a New York Times bestselling Chief Inspector Gamache novel from Louise Penny. Hardly a day goes by when nine year old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions, to walking trees, to winged beasts in the woods, to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village. But when the boy disappears, the villagers are faced with the possibility that one of his tall tales might have been true. And so begins a frantic search for the boy and the truth. What they uncover deep in the forest sets off a sequence of events that leads to murder, leads to an old crime, leads to an old betrayal. Leads right to the door of an old poet. And now it is now, writes Ruth Zardo. And the dark thing is here. A monster once visited Three Pines. And put down deep roots. And now, Ruth knows, it is back. Armand Gamache, the former head of homicide for the Sûreté du Québec, must face the possibility that, in not believing the boy, he himself played a terrible part in what happens next.

Excellent addition to a great series

This series just keeps getting better and better. I've said it in previous reviews but the real joy in reading a Louise Penny book is the thoroughly engaging characters. Their heartfelt struggles, their relationship joys, and the laugh out loud banter between the main characters are on full display again in this novel. I'm glad to see them firmly back in Three Pines with all the great characters. Since so much is based on the continuing relationships between the characters, I strongly recommend starting with the first book, "Still Life," and reading them in order. Highly recommended

I Love Louise Penny's Books

Each time I read one of Louise Penny’s novels, I am amazed by her gift of writing – her imagination, her development of characters whom I have come to love. This eleventh book in her series was quite involved with espionage and a fearful and factual history based in our actual world.

A page turner

Armand and Reine-Marie are enjoying their retirement in Three Pines and their neighbors. Laurent, a young boy in the village, has a great imagination and is always talking about things that he sees or finds on his adventures. He comes into The Bistro talking about a big gun that he found in the woods, bigger than a house with an alien on it. Everyone dismisses his story, but the next day he goes missing. The whole town comes together to look for him and when he is found dead, it is first believed to be an accident, but upon further investigation it was murder. Now everyone is trying to figure out what Laurent saw that caused him to become a target. This book was so engrossing, and a little of a departure from past books in this series, that I didn't want to put it down. And it was fascinating at the end to find out that Gerald Bull was a real person. I can't wait for more of this series.

An Almost True Story

Large portions of the story are based on real events although they didn't take place in Three Pines. Like a lot of fiction I read, I started doing research on the map location and ended up going down a rabbit hole.
