If you're looking for the best bird book for North America, this is it. It is one of my most prized possessions and has enriched my life more than I can describe. The only complaint I have is it's much too big to consider taking with me on any hike whatsoever, but that's what happens when a book is the last word for information. It does work well as a car book and also a tabletop reference. If you want the best field guide (small enough to carry) I recommend the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. It is more manageable in size on long days hiking and is good enough to identify and educate about any birds you could encounter in North America. Stay away from pocket guides and any books that are "eastern" or "western" because they're practically useless, especially if you live near the center of the US. Lots of cheaper guides have photographs which are just terrible for identifying birds. Paintings like what's in SIbley's and the National Geographic are much better. If you have a Sibley's and a good pair of binoculars you're all set to explore the wonders of birding and birdwatching.
