I Do Not Recommend

'The Skin I'm In' by Sharon Flake is about a middle school girl named Maleeka, who is constantly bullied by her peers. A new English teacher comes to Maleeka’s school, and she has a white spot on her face that drives children to tease her and not take her seriously. Maleeka befriends a mean girl named Charlese, for protection of the other kids who make fun of her. Maleeka gets in trouble because of Char, but later confesses it was Charlese's fault. Although the plot was rather interesting, the dialogue was very poor with slang that was difficult to make out, and the 'important' scenes were not very detailed. The narrator (Maleeka) is very slow at explaining the entire story, and you’re kind of just left there, thinking ‘Just say it already, I’m dying here’. I would not recommend this book, and I rate it a 2 out of 5.

Slow Read

This book was a slow read for me. I had to alternate between this book and another. Once the book started picking up it was a good read.
