Inspired by stories from One Thousand and One Nights, this book weaves together the gripping tale of a legendary smuggler, a cowardly prince, and a dangerous quest across the desert to find a legendary, magical lamp. Neither here nor there, but long ago . . . Loulie al-Nazari is the Midnight Merchant: a criminal who, with the help of her jinn bodyguard, hunts and sells illegal magic. When she saves the life of a cowardly prince, she draws the attention of his powerful father, the sultan, who blackmails her into finding an ancient lamp that has the power to revive the barren land—at the cost of sacrificing all jinn. With no choice but to obey or be executed, Loulie journeys with the sultan's oldest son to find the artifact. Aided by her bodyguard, who has secrets of his own, they must survive ghoul attacks, outwit a vengeful jinn queen, and confront a malicious killer from Loulie's past. And, in a world where story is reality and illusion is truth, Loulie will discover that everything—her enemy, her magic, even her own past—is not what it seems, and she must decide who she will become in this new reality.

Hooked into this world and characters!

Loulie, the Midnight Merchant, was fierce but had vulnerability. Qadir, her bodyguard, was mysterious and magical, and cared for her tenderly. Mazen, a prince longing to escape the palace, went on a journey to find his own power and identity. Aisha, one of Omar’s forty thieves, had to discover the difference between vengeance and justice. This story had great characters with complex relationships, difficult family dynamics, and tragic backstories. I liked the short chapters and shifting POVs. The world-building was teased out slowly alongside the unfolding action. I enjoyed the practical enchanted objects that helped them on their journey and the legends told within the book. I love stories that have a focus on the wonder and importance of storytelling. I’m looking forward to the next book and learning more about the jinn and their world.

A World To Get Lost In

I purchased this book last week and read it over the course of the last few days. It's not particularly fast paced most of the time, as the story takes time to develop the world and characters, so if that is something you are not a fan of this book might not be for you. I love the world building though, and at one point completely forgot the whole point of the main "quest" just because I got so caught up in the adventure that unfolded along the way. I can't wait for the next installment to see how the story continues!

I Fell for a Pretty Cover

If I had noticed that this was the first book in a trilogy, I wouldn’t have purchased it. It reads like YA, but I can’t find anywhere that it is marketed as such. I have read some very good YA fiction as an adult, but this is not it. The book is 463 pages, and at page 205, I finally decided to DNF. For the amount of time I was investing, I was not getting a payoff. The story is not exciting, nor are the characters compelling. It isn’t horrible writing, and I could have finished it, but it wasn’t worth my time. The one good thing about it is that the chapters are very short.

Pretty good!

Title: The Stardust Thief Author: Chelsea Abdullah Release Date: May 17th, 2022 Page Count: 481 Format: Hardcover/Audiobook Start Date: June 22nd, 2022 Finish Date: June 25th, 2022 Rating: 4 Stars Review: I read this in a readalong for Fairyloot. I kept trying to get into it and was really struggling. So I wound up picking up an audiobook copy of it and starting it over again. I'm really glad I decided to do that. I was able to not only absorb the information, but I also wound up really enjoying it very much. There were parts that were really confusing to me, but I think as the series continues I will understand it better. I will probably reread it before I read the sequels. That's just a thing I do with series. I'm sure people who avidly read my reviews already know this! This is one book where the Fairyloot book cover is almost similar to the original one. It's a really pretty cover at least. Hoping to be able to get my hands on the sequel soon!

I couldn't stop reading!

This book was amazing! I always thought the story of Aladdin was boring. But, this book made it really interesting! From the complex characters to the magical relics. It was an amazing adventure! Waiting for the second book to come out

Magical adventures

This book delivers everything the blurb and the book cover promises. A fast-paced story you can get lost in, with jinn and thieves, magical relics and and vast sand dunes. There's a hint of romance but nothing too obvious (though I am expecting more on this field in Book 2!). I really enjoyed this mixture of fairy tales, myths and Arabian adventures, and I got a very different ending to what I'd expected. Which is great!
