Amy Poeppel brings her signature, big-hearted, charming, The Washington Post style to this wise and joyful novel that celebrates love, hate, and all of the glorious absurdity in between. In the heart of Greenwich Village, three women form an accidental sorority when a baby - belonging to exactly none of them - lands on their collective doorstep. Lauren and her family - lucky bastards - have been granted the use of a spectacular brownstone, teeming with history and dizzyingly unattractive 70s wallpaper. Adding to the home's bohemian, grungy splendor is the bar occupying the basement, a mostly beloved dive called The Sweet Spot. Within days of moving in, Lauren discovers that she has already made an enemy in the neighborhood by inadvertently sparking the divorce of a couple she has never actually met. Melinda's husband of thirty years has dumped her for a young celebrity entrepreneur named Felicity, and, to Melinda's horror, the lovebirds are soon to become parents. In her incandescent rage, Melinda wreaks havoc wherever she can, including in Felicity's Soho boutique, where she has a fit of epic proportions, which happens to be caught on film. 8203, Olivia - the industrious twenty-something behind the counter, who has big dreams and bigger debt - gets caught in the crossfire.

Fun Read!

Such a fun read! The author really made the three women in this novel come alive. It really does take a village to raise a child and Hank definitely has a village.

OMG what a cute book! This book is full of heart and humor. I kept smiling while reading this book. The characters were well done and a little quirky which is always enjoyable. This was the first book I read of Amy's and I will definitely be reading more of her book. I highly recommend this sweet and funny book! Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

Cute and Fun

I really got into this book even though it it’s not my typical read. The characters were great, and I was happy with ending. What bothered me was the need…again…. for a contemporary author to add a gay character to a story. What was the point to this? I mean to each his own..live and let live, but every book I read these days has some sort of blurb about gay or trans characters. Obviously, there must be some sort of quota required by publishers to add some sort of “woke” scenarios into every story.

Wonderful Story

A funny, engaging and great novel. The ways in which the characters intersect and cohere is a riot. Everyone has quirks and foibles. It all revolves around baby Hank (Horatio) and his irresponsible parents. The relationships forged out of strange circumstances makes this entire book worthwhile. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Prepare to laugh

Health warning! This book can cause severe sleep deprivation. I read until I couldn't anymore and started to fall asleep mid-sentence. Taking off my glasses, setting my kindle on the night-stand ready to tuck in for the four hours left before the alarm went off--and bam, wide awake and reaching for the book again. I loved, I laughed and I wanted to move into the brownstone with this wacky family so that we could solve life's problems together. I would not hesitate to make this my NUMBER 1 BOOK RECOMMENDATION for 2023. Thank you to Atria/Emily Bestler Books and NetGalley for allowing me a digital ARC. This opinion is true, honest and my own words.

Another Hit From Amy Poeppel

“Olivia was finally coming to understand one indisputable truth: relationships were hideously, absurdly, almost comedically complicated. Maybe the trick was to stop taking it all so seriously.” Set in Greenwich Village NYC, a slightly dilapidated, but well-loved apartment with a bar in the basement is home base to this story with lots of characters and lots of heart. Melinda, Lauren and Olivia are three women at different stages in their lives. Each have people and chaos in their orbits. Their unconventional worlds converge, creating laugh-out-loud scenes and razor sharp dialogue. It truly was the perfect entry point for the segue into a new year of reading for me. If you enjoyed any of Ms. Poeppel’s other novels (Musical Chairs, Small Admissions) I highly recommend adding this crazy and clever novel to your lists. The Sweet Spot, indeed!

Loved loved loved this book!

Amy Poeppel's novel *The Sweet Spot* is a complicated but heartwarming story about unconventional women in messy, sometimes hilarious situations trying to make the best of a world that trips them up and challenges their assumptions. The characters in the novel are relatable and well-developed, the plot is engaging and fast-paced, and the novel is jam-packed with laugh-out-loud moments. Poeppel is an absolute master of writing comic relationship stories. In addition to the wonderful characters and story, the book has a lot of heart. It is a story of quirky families, friendship, and finding a place in the world. I REALLY think this story needs to be made real on a silver or digital screen!
