Amazing Book!

The War That Saved My Life is an incredible book for readers of all ages. The War That Saved My Life is a Newbery Honor Award-winning book by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley written in 2015. The story is a historical fiction novel set during World War ll. The protagonist, Ada Smith, lives in London with her mother and brother Jamie. Ada is forced by her mother to stay inside because she is crippled with a twisted foot. Her brother, Jamie, goes outside daily to explore London with friends. Ada is like the maid of the house, always preparing meals and taking care of her brother. If she does not do these daily chores major consequences will take place. For instance, being locked away in a cupboard, or being hit in the back of her head by her mother with blood rushing from her head. World War ll is approaching with Hilter invading soon. Children are sent to the countryside, along with Adas' brother Jamie, to escape the war and flee to safety. Ada does not want to be left behind. So she sneaks behind her mother and flees to the countryside with her brother. Shortly after, Jamie and Ada arrive in the countryside and live with a kind woman named Susan Smith who is forced to take them in. Eventually, Ada learns how to walk, ride a horse, and read. Her relationship with Susan also begins to strengthen. During this, the war is becoming more severe. Their mother comes to them and wants to take them back. However, the children must decide if they want to go with their abusive mother or stay with Susan. I enjoyed reading this book as it was encouraging and intriguing to read. Furthermore, it was a great way to learn about history from a different perspective. Although the book is very emotional about abuse and compassion, kindness is a great lesson along with more themes. Some themes that are present in this book include love, resilience, overcoming adversity, and many more meaningful themes. The writing has a lot of meaning and shows the depth of Ada's emotions. The book contrasts the ways the characters had to escape the challenges of war and adapt to a new lifestyle. Showing the importance of love and being accepted. Whenever I picked up this book to read, I never wanted to put it down. If you are interested in reading a book about history or in particular World War ll, I would recommend this book.

Middle grade historical fiction

If you are looking for WWII historical fiction for readers age 10 and up, THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE will not disappoint. Author Kimberly Brubaker Bradley takes readers to the English countryside as the war is beginning to rage throughout Europe and headed toward England. Ada and her brother Jaime live in London with their vindictive mother. Their living conditions are poor and food is scarce. Jaime attends school with other kids in the neighborhood, but Ada rarely leaves their small flat. She sits at the window and watches as the world passes her by. Born with a clubfoot, Ada's mother is ashamed of the deformity and keeps Ada hidden away. Ada is expected to prepare the meals and tea and keep watch over her younger brother while her mother works nights at a nearby pub. Any small error results in Ada being locked away in a tiny kitchen cupboard. She fears the smelly, cockroach infested space with every fiber of her being, but there's is nothing she can do. When the children of London are sent to the countryside to escape the forecasted bombing as the war ramps up, Ada's mother sees it as a chance to rid herself of the children she never wanted in the first place. Ada and Jaime end up living with Susan, a sad, anxiety ridden woman in a small village. Susan never pictured herself having children or tending to someone else's so the relationship is filled with tension. Neither Ada nor Jaime are very worldly making communication about manners and customs difficult. The three must learn to trust one another as they slowly form a bond that turns out benefiting all. There is a sequel titled THE WAR I FINALLY WON. I'm eager to continue following Ada's adventures.
