"Nothing short of a masterpiece. " - NPR Books A New York Times Bestseller and a Washington Post Notable Book of the Year. In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. Widely hailed for its "sweeping, sobering account of the American past" (New York Times Book Review), Jill Lepore's one-volume history of America places truth itself a devotion to facts, proof, and evidence at the center of the nation's history. The American experiment rests on three ideas "these truths," Jefferson called them political equality, natural rights, and the sovereignty of the people. But has the nation, and democracy itself, delivered on that promise? These Truths tells this uniquely American story, beginning in 1492, asking whether the course of events over more than five centuries has proven the nation's truths, or belied them. To answer that question, Lepore wrestles with the state of American politics, the legacy of slavery, the persistence of inequality, and the nature of technological change. "A nation born in contradiction… will fight, forever, over the meaning of its history," Lepore writes, but engaging in that struggle by studying the past is part of the work of citizenship.

Essential for This Time

A one-volume history of the United States is a daunting, if not impossible, task. Jill Lepore has the credentials and (just as crucial) the skill to do the job. As a former U.S. History teacher, I have waded through countless textbooks and histories, but seldom have I encountered one that tells the story of our country with such breadth and insight. Especially in this current post-factual age, where any honest accounting of the troubling nature of our often-flawed cultural and political history is condemned as "anti-American" or "fake history," it is refreshing to encounter a book with no agenda other than to tell as complete a story as is possible. Lepore is a splendid stylist whose writing is a joy to read. I only wish that I had this book available when I was still teaching.

History as a living breathing part of our lives,

Jill Lepore's These Truths is one of those rare birds, a history book with a writer talented enough to drive the narrative at full speed, reminding us that the excitement of an hour of AGT is the same excitement that coursed through this nation's blood hour after hour, decade after decade. Lepore has tapped, channeled that electrical flow and charged these pages with crackling energy. Perhaps a more balanced, deeper view than Zinn's game-changing history, it nevertheless tips some of the same sacred American cows, inciting the absolutists in our midst (see the "biased" reviews). In the midst of a great national reconsideration of our history, lore and behavior we have been inculcated with and often inured to, this book is a necessary (and delightful) read and reference!

I now understand exactly what the Right means when they talk about progressivism infiltrating education. I have serious concerns about what are children are being taught. For example, If you believe that racism was an underlying factor in every single historical event in the last 400 years; than Jill Lepore’s These Truths will be a must read for you! My children wouldn’t use this for anything other than a booster-seat.
