The first book of this series is hard to get through compared to the others. Lots of world building, lots of politics, lots of characters and different things happening, but PLEASE don't let that stop you. It's worth it. The main two characters are polar opposites and both strong in their own way. Their interactions are interesting and really pull you in. If you're mainly here looking for the romance, warning: it's not going to come quickly. This is super slow burn and lots of downs before it goes anywhere. Which honestly just makes the end of the series even more satisfying. The side characters are also very well developed and I became invested in them as well. A lot of time is spent on describing the fight scenes which can become very abstract. These were the hardest sections for me to get through. To be honest I gave up a few times on trying to visualize it, but this didn't overall subtract from my enjoyment of the story.

Got addicted at first read
This is a really well down series. I started because of the picture, and I have ordered all of them. The characters are well developed, and while there is a bit of terminology getting up, it is worth it

Highly Recommend
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this! If your only experience reading Danmei are MXTX's works than this may be a little difficult to get into at first, as it uses more wuxia terminology and is more focused on the historical/political context of the story than her works tend to be. However, once you get into it, you won't be able to put it down! The story is unique and interesting and the characters are all very well written. I especially loved the protagonist Shen Qiao. Even though he is a gentle and compassionate person, he is not weak and is willing to be brutal at times to prevent bad people from committing more atrocities. I'm really looking forward to volume 2!

Exceeded my Expectations (can't wait for vol2)
I loved this novel way more than I thought I would. I was intrigued by the synopsis and was basically instantly hooked thanks to the wonderful writing style and the interesting characters. The two main characters are basically opposites. Shen Qiao (the 'true' main character so to speak) is a just, gracious man, who believes in the being kind to others, and he has recently lost a duel and been left for dead. Yan Wushi, one of the most powerful people in the world, believes that all people are selfish; everything he does is for his own amusement or gains. Yan Wushi wonders if Shen Qiao will stand by his beliefs due to the unfortunate circumstances he's in. Of course, these characters have a lot of charge interactions and disagreements because of their opposing philosophies. I really liked how Yan Wushi's character has been presented so far. Even with him being totally self-centered, he doesn't feel unrealistically or comically evil more amoral, and he has a certain charisma that makes him fun to read and you always want to know what he's up to when he appears. Shen Qiao is also instantly loveable. Following the events at the beginning of the story, he's down on his luck and struggling to survive. His character has a lot of reflection, and I'm really curious to know where his character is going to go. The story involves a lot of different factions all struggling to gain power, and of course, with political conflict comes people with secret plans and schemes in the background. It's pretty obvious that these conflicts are going to play a huge role in the story. This novel does a great job of setting the stage for the drama I assume will happen in the future volumes. Since Shen Qiao is not familiar with the world due to how he used to live and his injury, we basically learn as he does. However, the volume isn't just super slow world building or descriptions, it's balanced with interesting dialogue, action, and intriguing situations. I can't wait for volume 2!
