nonfiction exploring female sexuality

In this nonfiction Lisa Taddeo explores desire and sexuality through the intimate stories of three women she spent years researching and coming to know well. There is Maggie who as a teen had a relationship with a 30-year-old teacher who groomed her first by offering friendship, then the façade love. Years later she reports him and takes him to court, where she is portrayed as a seductress. There is Lina, a bored housewife in a sexless marriage, who has an affair with her high school sweetheart. And there is Sloane, a beautiful and successful business owner, who's husband orchestrates threesomes, or chooses men for her to sleep with while he watches. Taddeo does an excellent job exploring a range of sexual experiences and really humanizing these women and what drives them. Their desires, their insecurities, their longing for both physical intimacy and also acceptance comes through so well. The reader is there for the exciting moments, but also the loneliness, and the pain that they can sometimes inflict on the people in their lives. Human love and sexuality is a complicated thing, but for women in America, a country built on Puritan ideals, lust and sexual desire can be very stigmatized. This book takes a hard look at the consequences women face when they choose to no longer repress their sexual desires. And it challenges the reader to think more critically about whether this expectation that women suppress their sexuality is natural or healthy.

such an interesting read

as a woman reading this book puts into perspective the way our past traumas and the way society sees us (the patriarchy, societal norms, etc) affects us heavily in the way we quite literally interact with other humans in relationships. the three stories mainly followed heterosexual relationships and really highlights the the roles woman are made to have when it comes to dating, sex, love, etc. never read a book like this, very good read

Powerful!

Fascinating, devastating, and powerful. I'm not sure why I expected this book to be more of a reflection of women's sexuality overall, but it isn't. It's specifically about three women, who are not representative of all women. And all three have trauma in their pasts, so lots of trigger warnings with this book. But I thought it was well done, engaging, and worth a read. Maggie's story is especially eye-opening. Her identity has not been changed, and her story became very public. If you think a 17 year old is partly responsible when they get involved with a teacher, you'll probably change your mind by the end of her story.

Nonfiction

“A riveting true story about the s*x lives of three American real women...” Really? The description of this book does it a disservice. It is more the riveting true story about three American real women who are damaged by society’s expectations of women. I believe every single woman who reads this non-fiction will understand that there are parts of it that apply to them. Over and over again I am reminded of the things we do as women to attract love. Although the book is nonfiction, it reads very easily and reads like fiction. There are lines and phrases that go immediately to my soul and also to the girl I was when I was 12 or 20, or 40 or 60. Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for ARC.

Devastatingly gorgeous

I am absolutely captivated by Taddeo's writing. Three Women is difficult at times but it is entirely unique. This book took Lisa 8 years to write, and it's obvious. I don't recommend if you're suffering from immediate trauma or PTSD, but otherwise this is an extremely captivating and incredible book.
