From Reading Slump to Literary Revival

I can not tell you how long it has been since I have read a book out of pleasure. I used Chat GPT to recommend books based on films, TV shows and anime I enjoyed such as The Boys, JJK, Equalizer Trilogy, Chronicle etc. and was recommended this book. If you are a fan of any of the entertainment I listed/their genres, I say grab this book. This is a masterpiece and I loved every page of it.

Not a superhero story!

Vicious is not a superhero story. If you’re looking for morally grey characters fighting over morally grey principles who at points are downright villainous, this is your book. Victor Vale is not a hero, his story arc shares tropes with that of a Marvel hero, but Victor is barely even an antihero. This is the third book I’ve read by V.E. Schwab (first Addie, then Gallant) and each and every one has been its own unique gem that stands apart while still utilizing the poetic prose I’ve come to expect, and love, from Schwab (no surprise she started as a poet!). Despite the darkness that Vicious displays at its forefront, there is a beautiful found family trope that just barely redeems Victor as the protagonist. Five stars!

Perfect for a reading slump

I've been in bit of a reading slump for a while- just not sure what I want to read, nothing sounded extremely appealing to me. Picked this book because of a recommendation and I'm glad I did. I don't typically read books like this- focused on a revenge story- but it is fantasy so not totally out of my likings. I'm really glad someone recommended this to me and I did pick it up because I couldn't put it down. If you're not SUPER into super heroes like me- don't worry. It's not a typical super hero story at all. Schwab does a great job telling an interesting story about characters you want to stay with forever. This book has everything I didn't know I wanted in a book and it does it so well. Highly recommend.

Flatliners Vibe

I just completed Vicious by V.E. Schwab! I listened to this as an audio and really enjoyed the story (not so much the narrator, but that did not stop my enjoyment)! This definitely gave me Flatliners vibes - the Kiefer Sutherland movie in the 80s/90s. The concept of Near death experiences leading to ordinary people becoming extraordinary was cool. Also think X-Men! This was a quick read and I liked all the characters - even the evil ones. All had flaws and saving graces. I really recommend this one and gave it 4 stars. Can’t wait to read the second in the trilogy!

Dark and Intriguing

One of the best books I've ever read. Anyone who want's to know the villain's side of the story needs to read this book. V.E. Schwab is a master storyteller and this book is my favorite by her yet!

Entertaining Superhero Read

This novel was entertaining and thrilling, with the stretches from reality just close enough to create relatable characters while still being “extraordinary”. The characters created by V. E. Schwab toe the line perfectly between hero and villain, and there are no fully good or bad characters. If you enjoy superhero movies, comics, or modern AU I would highly recommend this book.

Everything about this is amazing

I love everything about this book. It was so hard to put down, and I probably would have read it all in one sitting if I hadn’t been reading with a friend! I had been putting off reading it for a long time, because the first book I read by VE Schwab was The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, and other fans of Schwab said that that was her best work. I was worried that reading another work by her, by comparison, would let me down. It did not. Everything about this book drew me in. There was never a part where I was bored. It’s very hard to write a review without spoiling anything, so I’ll just say: READ THIS BOOK.
