A Sunday Times Bestseller. A 2022 Alex Award Winner. "Sparks fly" (NPR) in Everina Maxwell's gut-wrenching and romantic space opera debut. Prince Kiem, a famously disappointing minor royal and the Emperor's least favorite grandchild, has been called upon to be useful for once. He's commanded to fulfill an obligation of marriage to the representative of the Empire's newest and most rebellious vassal planet. His future husband, Count Jainan, is a widower and murder suspect. Neither wants to be wed, but with a conspiracy unfolding around them and the fate of the empire at stake they will have to navigate the thorns and barbs of court intrigue, the machinations of war, and the long shadows of Jainan's past, and they'll have to do it together. So begins a legendary love story amid the stars. Like Ancillary Justice meets Red, White and Royal Blue, Winter's Orbit is perfect for fans of Lois McMaster Bujold. "High-pitched noises escaped me, I shouted, more than once, 'Now kiss.' . . . in a world so relentlessly uncertain, there's a powerfully simple pleasure in the experience of a promise kept."

Slow Burn Queer SciFi

Adding to the lore from Ocean's Echo with different characters on different planet in the same universe as before.... it was great. My only complaint is you do not get any resolution on the main romance until you read the short story online after the book. Let my boys have their love!!

Slow start, picks up rapidly in the middle

I really enjoyed reading this. I felt like the start was slow, but was endeared enough with the characters that it was fine. It picks up rapidly half way through and had me very invested. Wish there'd been a bit more world building and sci fi elements, because the peaks we get of it are very interesting. But felt like teases. I don't think a spoon fed glossary of information would've been better, I just think some time could've been spent on making them less "just people but in space". Enjoyed the romance, was glad there was plot outside of it. It's not challenging to read or follow. Or too dense to enjoy casually. I'm looking forward to her second book just to see more of the greater universe outside what turned out to be a backwater solar system. Overall, fun to read and a good set up for more books.

Enjoyable read of an LGBT romance story

Loved the gay romance story. In this universe, gay pairings are not at all unusual, but the two protagonists are set up by their own personalities and cultural differences to fail. So much so that when they finally DO begin to communicate their feelings to each other, it is a big dramatic step. That part of the story enthralled me. Once secure with each other the two heroes embark on a space opera. While not the BEST Space story ever written (too many shortcuts to a story that should have been more complex), it is well written and satisfying, with several dramatic twists near the end. I’d recommend this for anyone who enjoys gay romance.

Instant Comfort Read

The first thing I need to say is that the cultures that exist in this world are beautiful. I loved how the difference between Iskat and Thean social behaviors contributed to the romantic tension between Kien and Jainan in their "fake" marriage. "Oh, he must hate me and think I'm disgusting," said both of them. "I am absolutely in love with him but I don't want him to feel pressured," they also said. It was fairly predictable in some ways, but not so much as to overshadow how much I loved the characters, setting, and dialogue. Bottom line: I will definitely be reading this again. :)

Never Enough!!

This novel was filled with mystery and politics and military strategy, wrapped in an amazing galaxy. If you have never read M/M romance, this is a great 'first' read. The overcoming of emotional abuse in romantic relationships as well as dealing with one's own personal insecurities and faults were some great themes in this story. Maxwell created a wonderful galaxy and I loved the plantery involvement. I have never wanted a story to be a movie so badly so I could 'see' it. For fans of epic sci-fi, expansive worlds, and 'who-done-it' mysteries... fall in love with this ragtag group.

So much fun!

This is the perfect happy read that contains all of the best romance tropes but it's in SPACE (this isn't heavy sci-fi so don't let that put you off). It's essentially "arranged marriage to lovers" (but make it gay) and includes the tropes: "only one bed" and "need your body heat to avoid freezing to death." There's some interesting world building and political maneuvering (the reasons for the aforementioned arranged marriage) to round out the wholly satisfying tale, and it just left me feeling so happy that I've been recommending it to everybody I know!

emotional rollercoaster in the best way

recommend this for people who need something captivating to keep them interested. i have adhd and struggle immensely keeping my focus while reading, but i finished this entire book in -4 days (reading out loud the whole time--helps with focus-- my throat hurts XD). i enjoyed the so-called "soapy" ending, but maybe that's because i enjoy perfect happy endings
