This is a unique bi-lingual graphic novel about a group of Hispanic kids showing that compassion has no language barriers. It starts off Breakfast Club-like and ends with a positive message of kindness and accomplishment. Perfect for fans of Shannon Hale, Kayla Miller, and Raina Telgemeier, it is a great summer read for elementary and middle school kids.

A bilingual middle-school must-read!
A group of Spanish-speaking students at Conrad Middle School is forced to work together on a community service project that eventually brings them together and shows them the hardships that can befall anyone at any time. This is being shared as a modern-day 'Breakfast Club' but instead of a ragtag group of kids in detention, this wonderful graphic novel is about a group of Spanish-speaking kids that are persuaded to work together to boost their school's community volunteer hours, where they discover a family truly in need. Despite their differences, these empathetic young ones learn to work together to solve the dilemma and try to stay out of trouble in the meantime. This is such a heartwarming story with great character development and a happy ending but I especially loved that it is a BILINGUAL BOOK! Yes, I had to 'shout' that because I've yet to come across any book that shares the majority of its dialogue in another language, WITH TRANSLATIONS, and as someone that is fascinated by languages and actively learning to read Spanish, this was a beautiful thing to see and read. We really do need more books like this!

WHERE DO I START? HOW ABOUT WITH: WOW!!
Where do I start? How about with: WOW!! This relevant middle grade graphic novel takes on the here and now as a group of disparate Spanish-speaking students, all with very different cultural roots and family dynamics, learn that they share enough to band together to have a profound effect on their middle school, community, a pair of marginalized strangers they encounter, and each other. INVISIBLE is a special book; I don’t say that lightly. The characters are so human and down-to-earth…just like real kids. They act and speak impulsively, have a chip or two on their shoulders, worry about getting in trouble and being disliked by others, and they have big hearts which, though bruised, have the capacity to trust, and try and change. The characters are so diverse that readers can’t help but find something relatable, and will root for, like this librarian did, all of the students to succeed. Many issues kids face are honestly and respectfully presented, and the adults, some of whom made assumptions about the students based upon their heritage, language and other circumstances, show the ability to be sensitive and grow their own characters as they become aware of the efforts of this mismatched band of children to help others less fortunate than themselves. I have read countless books, putting them on library shelves and in classrooms, and when I reached page 190 in INVISIBLE [ do NOT look ahead! :) ], I had a lump in my throat, tears in my eyes, and a great big smile on my face. Gabriela Epstein proves to be a master at animating the emotions of children in her illustration of their faces and body language. Colorist Lark Pien provides a gorgeous palette, resulting in a bright and buoyant book. The words…oh, the words!...of author Christina Diaz Gonzalez, in double word bubbles of Spanish and English, are a stroke of brilliance, making the conversation among the kids (and their inner dialogue) actually feel audible. I had the feeling I was right there, with those kids, all the time. You know how it feels when, very occasionally, all the parts of a whole come together and it seems like magic has been created? I know what that feels like…it feels like INVISIBLE. This book is a must for every middle school classroom, school and public libraries, and all ESL curricula, regardless of language orientation. Do your kids/students/readers of all ages a favor…offer them INVISIBLE.

Amazing new graphic novel for middle graders!
Christina Diaz Gonzalez crafted an amazing story looking at the similarities and differences of 5 different students as they’re thrown together. Readers will smile as they acclimate to each other, cringe at the microagressions, nod at the lessons, and cheer at the ending. Just an overall amazing read!

Highly recommend
I loved this new book by Gonzalez and illustrated by Epstein. For the kid who feels unseen, this book is for you. Having taught so many students who had English as a second language- it is a book that allow Latinos to see themselves in a graphic novel and for others, to see that there are so many different kinds of students representing different cultures and backgrounds. A must have for middle school libraries.
