Sandwich: A Novel by Catherine Newman
Product details
Web ID: 20312088Highly politicized
What the description of this book fails to tell you is the amount of vulgar verbiage, inappropriate sexual content and leftist indoctrination. Just like any woke book/movie, they will try to relate to the majority of us as a bait and then they will include their agenda little by little, until there’s no room left for anything else. So original. I picked up this book due to connection to growing children and relationships, but it ended up being a vomit of words and why abortion is a good thing. DISGUSTED. Please be more explicit in your description of the book, but just like with every leftist writer, you won’t!

Pass
I was so excited to have received an email from B & N with the “Monthly Pick” and great reviews. I generally do not write poor reviews, however, wanted to save someone else from experiencing such a disappointment. No cadence to the writing and vulgar comments by the main character, in my opinion. I really tried. Read half the book and could not take much more.

slice of life with a side of trauma
Sandwich explores that in-between time of parenting almost adults and starting to parent your parents. The book recalls childhood memories and how grief unexplored leads to rifts, but not insurmountable ones. Very relatable and true to life.

One of my favorite books of the year!
It's official - Catherine Newman is an auto-buy author for me, going forward. I loved her debut novel, We All Want Impossible Things. Her new novel, Sandwich, delivers more of the same heart, humor, and wisdom touched with a swirl of darkness. I loved everything this novel had to say about motherhood, marriage, empty nests, our love for our children, the passing of time, what we don't know about our aging parents, the importance of tradition, the power of nostalgia, and the hard truths of living an open-hearted life. I found myself highlighting (in my Kindle) so many passages that I want to remember and reflect on later. This particular family's culture really came to life for me. Their conversations were so witty and warm and incisive. They don't really beat around the bush, even though there certainly are some secrets being kept. I can't wait to see what Newman writes and publishes next!

Not a good book
I do not understand the hype around this book. It is boring, disjointed and just plane bad. Give it a skip.

Wow! What a Ride...
"Sandwich" is about three generations of one family being brought together for their annual family vacation. All have a unique voice but the one resounding voice heard above the others is Rocky’s. Along with her husband, she is sandwiched between her parents and two adult children. The main focus of this story is their extended family as seen through Rocky’s eyes and heart. It’s bold and tender, full of humor and sadness, and her first-person narrative exposes her secrets, fears, and regrets. But mostly, it's a story about deep, endearing love. I read Catherine Newman's previous novel "We All Want Impossible Things" and fell in love with her simple writing style, emotional storytelling, and perfectly imperfect characters. My first response after reading it was "Wow, what a ride!". How does Newman pack so much believable life and living into novels that are barely over 200 pages? I was hooked on "Sandwich" seconds after reading its short prologue. It's my favorite read of 2024 and I highly recommend it. Thank you, Catherine Newman, for another great ride! 5⭐ Thank you to Harper and Catherine Newman for the DRC via NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Not what I expected
Not what I was expecting, but I enjoyed leaning about this quirky, loving family as they spend their annual week at the beach cottage. It’s about love and its evolving state, whether it’s romantic or parent/child. It’s about keeping secrets and whether the holder of the secrets is trying to protect their loved ones or themselves. It touches on post-partum depression and anticipatory grief and shines a spotlight on couple dynamics and navigating a marriage. The story is narrated with humor and self-deprecation by Rocky, the mom, who is dealing with menopause, the weight of guilt, and being an empty nester. Recommended.

The BEST
I love this book SO much. I am someone who struggles to finish books because they bore me or I get distracted with something else, but not Sandwich. The way she writes evokes all emotion and also makes you feel like you are right there with her/the characters. I am so glad to have read this.
